“What a strange question,” he hums softly in mock ponder. His hums push his eyes to roll until he’s sure he can see the front of his brain. “It probably has the rich taste of nitrogen and a flavor bomb of air. The universe really cooked when they made the sky.”
Such a dumb stupid thing to say and yet strings latch to the corners of Atsushi’s lips and tug until a myriad of chuckles burst through the seams like he’s never laughed a day in his life. And even through squinted eyes, he can feel the smugness burning the side of his face. A heat so suffocating yet so warm there’s no point thinning that smile to a straight line when it thaws the cold front Dazai’s keen on keeping. And yet, he’s laughing along with him. Atsushi would do anything to have his symphonic chuckles be the only thing he’d hear.

Summary
Atsushi turns to leave only to still and turn back around to eye Dazai. A smile curves his lips before moving towards him, “And one more thing-” he cups the lining of his ear, his breath fanning the surface with soft warmth that leaves Dazai enchanted. “I love you.”
No kiss on the cheek, no hug goodbye, just a declaration of his love for no one to hear but themselves. His lips part but the machine is missing its cogs still lying barren on the floor. His throat swells, it feels like he’s swallowing a waterfall of sand. It's scratchy and he wants to cough it all out but his throat clogs, his mouth is full, and his voice dissipates into white noise.
Dazai can't seem to say the words he so desperately wants to say to Atsushi
