Summary
Akira Kurusu is a high school drop-out who works shady jobs, an actual delinquent since the moment he stepped off the train arriving in Tokyo when he was sixteen.
Goro Akechi is an honest university student trying to get his degree and live life as plainly and as normally as he possibly could, wanting to blend into society as a regular, fade-into-the-background citizen.Sometimes, in the dead of night, they'd simply sit together on a park bench under a lamppost in Inokashira. Goro maybe-didn't like, maybe-actually loved the smell of Akira's cigarettes whenever they were next to each other, but he couldn't admit that to anyone— especially not to himself, lest he may just get addicted.

Objectively, if Akechi were a normal detective, there would be no way to connect magical cat ears to being a Phantom Thief. But he’s not, or at least he probably isn’t, because he can hear Morgana, and that means he knows this is probably a Metaverse thing, and why did Akira agree to this, this was so stupid, he is going to get arrested and then murdered and thrown in jail in probably not that order, and, oh.
There’s a hand in his hair.
(Kurusu is infuriating and beautiful and an exception to everything. Kurusu is standing in front of him with wide eyes and big feline ears, and Goro is coming to realize that he is a fucking sucker, and he should really leave, and he definitely won’t.)

But the worst part of this job has to be the main attraction: the sleazy mall Santa he’s been paired with. Akira Kurusu, who is currently late and missing in action while Goro is stuck with a horde of kids who want nothing more than to go home, and angry parents who glare at Goro like he personally caused a meteor to hit earth and wipe out humanity as they know it.

Goro stops walking. His wide eyes glisten under the streetlights—glossy like the twin buttons on a teddy bear’s face, glossy like the buttons on his crisp linen shirt, glossy like the metaphorical buttons that Akira aches to push. They stand still long enough for a car to rumble past, long enough for Akira’s pulse to skyrocket, for his palms to clam up with sweat that has nothing to do with the heat.
“If it’s only a matter of buttons,” Akechi whispers, “then I could say the same about you. Seduction is just... altering your behavior, tailoring it, putting on a show. Give me a week, Kurusu. I’ll make you the ‘desperate’ one.”
(Or: Goro and Akira make a bet.)

Akira fought the butterflies down that were fluttering somewhere in the pit of his stomach, threatening to come up and flower his words.
“Yeah, I don't know what his problem is, honestly,” he managed to get out, lips twitching as he caught Goro's eyes on him.
Always on him.
“Ah, the Phantom Thieves,” Goro Akechi greeted them with a saccharine smile. “Come to steal from the library now?” He gave Akira a sharp smirk as he aimed his next words directly at him. “That might be the only way you get through this semester.”
Or: Akira Kurusu is a normal college student. He goes to classes, hangs out with his friends, and gets regularly insulted in public scenes by his secret boyfriend.

He keeps eye contact with Akira. Demanding. Right, as if Goro will ever be anything but when he’s in this mood.
“I asked if I could do anything. Not if you could,” Akira says.
Goro’s mouth twitches, but of course keeps himself restrained. “I wouldn’t mind. That is, if you can keep my attention. As I said, I’m tired.”
Then he turns away, and goes back to sipping his Champagne with his eyes closed.
