Ilya nods, pressing his lips to Shane’s chest. When he speaks, it’s like he’s trying to push it between Shane’s ribs—directly to his heart.
“Baby.” This, first, in English. Then in Russian: “One day you’ll realize that you’re wasted on me.”
Shane utters a quiet sob, like he understands every word. Hours later, when Ilya’s trying to sleep, he’ll swear he can feel the same sound trapped in his throat.

Hayden knew he wasn’t stupid.
Well, not completely. Well, he felt like he was pretty smart about some things, and, okay, a little oblivious about others. Still, he liked to think he was pretty far from stupid—especially when compared to his fellow hockey players.
Like, he’d known that Shane had that off-and-on thing with that girl in Boston, Lily, for years. He didn’t know much more than that, and he especially didn’t know why Shane was so cagey about it, but his best friend was admittedly pretty weird about everything.

Harris hadn’t meant to say anything. He hadn’t even realized what he’d said, honestly, until Ilya’s reaction: choking on his beer, eyes bugging out, looking more nervous than Harris had ever seen him look.
Why couldn’t he have just kept his mouth shut? He was tipsy, and probably a bit too comfortable, but still. He should have known better. He felt like the biggest asshole alive.

Without greeting, “I already did my driveway,” Steve explains, “thought I’d come by and see the damage on your side. See what I could knockout.”
Eddie leans against the doorjamb, a cane held tight in his left hand. He’s not properly dressed to sit outside and keep Steve entertained, wearing flannel pajama bottoms and a sweat stained plain grey t-shirt. “Well, hello to you, too,” he gently teases.
Softly, “Hi,” Steve finally says. Though his right hand is mittened, he gives a terse, stiff finger wave.
Quietly, Eddie scoffs under his breath and playfully rolls his eyes. “You’re gonna overexert yourself,” he tells Steve, “Wayne’ll trek back just fine.” He opens the door a little wider, stepping back. “Wanna come inside?”

“You, you’re captain. Raiders. Boston.”
The room is silent except for the beeping of monitors.
In 2023, Shane takes a bad hit on the ice. When he wakes up, the last thing he remembers is a tuna melt.

Summary
Weeks after Montreal lost to Ottawa in the first round of the playoffs, Shane Hollander is now officially an unrestricted free agent, and his agent, Farah Jalali, is negotiating with Ottawa. While Shane and Ilya anxiously wait for an update from Farah at their cottage, Ilya tries to find a way to destress Shane.
But when Farah finally brings Shane the news, it's not quite the news Shane was hoping for, and Shane has to decide whether to take the contract, or look elsewhere, even if that means throwing away the chance to play with Ilya.
This is an imagined scene that takes place between Chapters 38 and 39 in The Long Game. Obvious spoilers for TLG!!!!

Then Ilya’s mouth was there. Right on the spot. His lips pressed a soft, lingering kiss to that exact patch of skin below Shane’s navel. It was a combination of the location, the tenderness of the gesture so at odds with Ilya’s usual aggressive passion, and the sheer accumulated sensitivity of weeks of focused attention that broke the dam.

___“I’m sorry I thought you were mama,” Ilya quickly said on top of her words, still unwilling to meet her eye. So this was where the majority of the silence stemmed from, then. Shame. She immediately sat back down, plate forgotten. Even with his head angled downwards, she did not miss the red flush on his cheeks and chin.

“How do you know my passcode?” Shane asks again.
“That’s what you’re focusing on?” Hayden is basically yelling at this point. “Rozanov is screwing your girlfriend, and you’re worried about how I know your fucking passcode?”
Shane’s brain fully short-circuits.
“Rozanov is what?”
