They failed to be the agents of the world they wanted to be - a change for the better, an inspiring one that would solidify the hope that all individuals had an equal right to live. Both were just as stuck, and also middle aged. Steban is a high school teacher and Ulixes doesn't want to teach in high school again. The world is full of nepotism and all they can do is smoke, and maybe talk about it all.
