Eddie sits gingerly in a plastic pool chair. Listens to the interstate howl. He misses Christopher at a cellular level. Needs to be with him like he needs oxygen to survive.
He and Buck breathe at each other over the phone. Eddie picks at a loose filament of plastic on the arm of his chair.
A few days won’t change anything. Not really. And it feels like Buck might need him to say yes to this. Or at least that’s the excuse Eddie’s going to give himself.
or: Eddie drives to Texas to become the man his son deserves. Buck talks him through it.

“I panicked” she says, a shuffling on the other end. “He was getting all… mushy, saying stuff about feelings..”
“For you?”
“I know, right, can you believe it?
“You don’t think you could have told him the truth?” He asks, and there’s silence beneath the static. “Seems like you two are real close.”
And she sighs, and she lets out a noise of frustration that Eddie knows all too well, when you want to tell someone something, need to, and you can’t. You just can’t.

There are things that always happen, no matter how hard he tries: El doesn’t arrive in time. Eddie dies. Max is put in a coma.
Steve fails. They lose.
“Steve, how many loops have you been through?”
His head is nodding, and his eyes are watery, and Eddie has approached him like a spooked animal.
“I lost count.”
