Summary
Instead of leaving, Price grabbed a rickety old chair and dragged it noisily until it rested against the wall. He sat down with a quiet, grateful groan, pulling out a stubby cigar and his lighter.
"Ever used one of those before?" he mumbled around the lit cigar, putting the lighter back inside his tacvest without looking away from Kyle.
"No," Kyle answered honestly. "But it doesn't look too complicated."
Price's eyes crinkled. "You're right. Not complicated at all." He spread his long legs out in front of him. Kyle was momentarily distracted by the lazy display.
"Go on," Price cajoled, waving the glowing red eye of his cigar in the dark room. "We've been here a while, so I'll show you how to get it done quick."

Summary
"Problem, sir?" Kyle asked, not looking up from his own paperwork. He could read the shift in Price's posture like a change in the weather.
"Civilian op," Price grunted, tossing the phone on the desk. "Birthday barbecue. In London."
An idea, reckless and instinctive, presented itself.
"Sounds like you need a wingman, sir," Kyle said, his tone deceptively light. "Moral support. Someone to talk to about something other than mortgage rates and the best schools in the area."
or: Price brings Gaz along as his plus one. London's suburbanites are not ready for the tension crackling between these two.

Summary
“That time I was in hospital,” Kyle began, his voice deliberately even. “After the grenade.”
John looked up, his expression guarded. He gave a slow, cautious nod. They didn’t talk about that often.
“The doctors needed decisions. And I had no one. No next of kin. They had to convene a board. It was… clinical.”
John’s face had softened, the frustration from earlier replaced by a pained understanding. “Kyle…”
Kyle waved an impatient hand. “I’m not asking for a church wedding, John. I’m talking about a piece of paper. At a registry office. So if one of us ends up in a hospital, the other isn’t just… some guy. So we have the right to be there.”
or: a death in the family reminds Kyle of the importance of formalising their bond. Unfortunately, John might not be as open to it as Kyle hoped.

Summary
“Alright, sir? Heard you were poorly,” Gaz said, stepping inside and closing the door with his heel. His eyes did a quick tactical assessment of the room, missing nothing.
“I’m not ‘poorly’, Gaz. I’m temporarily inconvenienced,” Price grumbled.
Gaz placed the water on the table with a thud. “Brought you some supplies. High-pH, alkaline stuff. My sister swears by it for her,” he trailed off, visibly cycling through different words, before settling on, “…issues.”
or: Price is down for the count.

Summary
The jungle didn't fight fair.
Price wiped sweat from his brow, his fingers coming away gritty with salt and dirt. His sleeves had disintegrated past the elbows, the remaining fabric stiff with dried sweat and mildew. The webbing of his gear had begun to green with algae, the straps chafing raw patches on his shoulders that never had time to heal.
He watched as Gaz paused to slowly pry off a leech from his forearm with the edge of his knife. The lad didn't flinch, already used to the sting, as he let the bloated creature slip away into the wet, mulchy ground beneath their feet. Price’s eyes followed the dark bead of blood that welled up. Their eyes met and Gaz gave a slight nod.
Still good.
That was the problem.
or: Price and Gaz thread through the unforgiving Malayan jungle. Price can't help but keep a close eye on his sergeant.

Summary
Now, with the pressure of the job off of him, Gaz’s bladder began to protest again.
"Gotta piss," he complained to Price, his tone almost petulant. He was aching all over.
Price huffed a laugh. He finished putting their equipment away, replying dryly, "C'mon. I'll escort you to the little boy's room."
or, inspired by the in-game dialogue:
Price: Well, in fairness, he was probably potty-trained by then, Kate...
Gaz: Still am, sir.

“Did you even fight for me, sir?”
Price set his jaw, a flash of blue fury in his eyes.
“Nah, not you, not John Price,” Gaz smirked without any humour. “Already on his way to replace the broken part, isn’t he? The show must go on.”
Price finally held his eyes – just for a beat – before looking away. His voice remained controlled. “It was a clean op. Intel wasn’t great, but that’s what we work with. Your injury was—” he caught himself but steamrolled on “—bad luck.”
Gaz barked a laugh, full of pain in it. He could’ve punched him, if he wasn’t stuck to the bloody bed.
or: Gaz is medically discharged. He and Price don't handle it very well.

Summary
John ordered a whisky, a decent single malt. He’d earned the good stuff, even if the reason for drinking it today felt pathetic.
He sank two, then a third, the warmth doing little to dispel the chill of irrelevance that had settled in his bones. The maudlin thoughts, usually kept behind a stout lock, began to seep out. He was fifty-five. A retired soldier. A civilian. A man buying biscuits for his younger, still-serving partner who was God-knows-where doing God-knows-what. A man so sidelined, he was drinking alone on his own fucking birthday.
or: John adjusts to civilian life, badly. He and Kyle settle into a new dynamic... which also has room for improvement.

Summary
Jack just laughed and shoved him a little harder into the door, a visceral, physical reminder: he was in control now. He expected Robby to bitch him out, sharp like he got when cornered—
Except instead Robby slumped, his breath out almost relief, like all the fight had drained from him. He didn't say anything, just took a few shaky breaths, body shivering under Jack's—

Summary
He was aware of the pull of stitches on his face, but they didn’t hurt, and there was a pressure on his face— he felt detached from it all, like the moment before he might fall asleep, teetering on a precipice he had no particular concern to fall down; it took him several moments, then, to realise someone was in the room with him, voice quiet and murmured as they talked to themselves. He tried to open his mouth to say something, but his lips were dry, and the pressure— he was almost sure it was an oxygen mask— was getting in the way; frustrated, he reached up to it—
And found his wrist was cuffed.Legally, Simon Riley is dead. Ghost remains, an asset of the British military; his status favours him for the off the books missions, conditions where no man should be able to carry out the mission and come out unscathed.
He can carry out the mission.
He doesn’t always come out unscathed.Series

Summary
Two drowning soldiers wasn’t better than one, Ghost reminded himself, staring at the water where he had fallen— twenty seconds— the only thing worse than cold water shock was jumping in unprepared, blind— twenty five— they were trained to survive drowning, to swim in all conditions, and MacTavish was the best of the best; Ghost had to trust that he would be okay, that—

“You alright, Sergeant?” Ghost asks when Soap finds him in the base kitchen at three am, making tea. “Look like you’ve seen a ghost.”
It’s the first time they’re meeting like this. Off duty, in civvies. Alone.
The water starts boiling. Ghost tilts his head, prompts, “MacTavish?”
Alright, Soap wants to say. “You ever dream of me?” comes out instead.
