He froze.
The room was, in a word, ransacked. Dresser drawers, fully removed from the main frame, were emptied onto the floor, their contents seemingly rummaged through then abandoned. Even the wardrobe, home to Mav’s khakis and small collection of formal wear, had been gutted, doors left agape.
It took Ice a few frantic seconds to spot Mav amongst the chaos.

" Some might call it suicidal, but Mav saw it as destiny aligning just right so that he could save his death for just the right moment. Die with a purpose, save somebody else, and find himself in his husband’s arms again.
Then again, Mav hadn’t accounted for Bradley taking after him quite so much, either. Somehow, he survived a mission that felt like a death sentence, one he’d been glad to fulfill, and when he came home, he didn’t know what to do with himself. What was left? He’d taken every step necessary, had made peace with a death that wasn’t fulfilled, and he didn’t know what to do with that. Not now that he had to actually reckon with Ice’s absence.
The distraction of the mission had kept his mind off of the grief, far more focused on getting the Daggers back alive and successfully bombing out the uranium plant, but with no goal to orient his focus around any longer, it hit him. Full force.
He stepped through the front door of their house and he just…crumbled. "

He flies like he has nothing left to lose (he doesn’t), a one man army (he is), leaving everyone else in the dust (so they don’t leave him). Admiral Kazansky claps him on the shoulder, says he expects great things from him, and Jake’s smile is feral as the rest of his flight school cohort looks on in disbelief.
Hangman, they all say, like Jake’s entire personality was a long con, and he ranks first in class.
