Summary
Built for a vocation he was no longer fit for and riddled with survivors' guilt, small town life just wasn't enough for Kent. But, when had it been? He never chose to have a kid at seventeen, to get married so young. It all just happened to him. Everything had ground to a halt, leaving Kent with only his aches, scars, and memories as souvenirs. So now what?
A chance encounter with a man the same age as his son sends Kent's mind into a tailspin. There's something about him, something worth chasing. Kent will stop at nothing to get to the bottom of it, even if it means destroying the very peace he went to war for in the first place.

It’s difficult being a single father, but Nick does as best he can at raising his little girl, Kim, in a house on his own. With how much he works, he’s often worried about her feeling lonely- but thankfully loneliness doesn’t seem to be much of a problem for her with how many imaginary friends she seems to have. Nick has overheard her reading stories with her teddy bear, giggling and laughing as she entertains herself with a board game, and playing pirate with the ship in a bottle. Most children probably wouldn’t be found trying to strike up a conversation with something like a vacuum, microwave, or the hangers in their closet- but Nick just figures that his daughter is on the more imaginative side. As long as she’s happy and not getting hurt, what’s the harm? In any case, he loves hearing about the antics that Kim and her imaginary friends get up to. Though those friends may not be as “imaginary” as Nick believes them to be…

“Elidibus,” she says, inclining her head respectfully to him. “I heard tell you might be found here.”
“Venat,” he says, and returns the gesture. “Do you have need of me?” This would hardly be the first time she sought him out in a professional matter, though the timing would be rather unfortunate. (Or, mayhap, fortunate for her; he does not know what will become of his Seat in the aftermath of the ritual, and their people will need the Emissary. Best that he does his duty as well he can now, while he is still present to do it.)
But she simply shakes her head, cool blue eyes trained on his face. “Am I not allowed to seek out my son on the eve of his sacrifice?”
“Ah.” Elidibus smiles, a thin, faint thing, and tilts his head back against the wood behind him again, brushing his hair from his face. “Of course. Your company is welcome, if you can stand my own poor farce of it.”
