Summary
When Xue Yang is seven years old, his faith and hopes are crushed alongside his left hand under the wheels of a carriage. When he lies in a dirty alley some days later, starving and shivering, closer to death than life, two boys find him. They take care of him, feed him, and fix what is left of his hand.
Their names are Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan, street urchins just like Xue Yang. That day, he carves their names into his heart.
Or: the AU nobody asked for, in which Xue Yang meets Xiao Xingchen and Song Lan while they are still homeless children and the three make a home for themselves in a world that never wanted them to thrive.

“Remember me, Xiao-daozhang. We will meet again.” Xue Yang accompanies these words with a smile and a cheeky wave of his bound hands before he is taken away, and that is the end of it. That should be the end of it.
But his smile haunts Song Lan, sending shivers down his spine whenever he thinks of it. He hates it. What he hates even more is that Xiao Xingchen doesn’t seem to mind the leering smile at all. Song Lan thinks he should.By the time they settle down for the night, Song Lan has spent enough time brooding and finally lets his anger explode. Xiao Xingchen catches it, as expected, gracefully—and maybe a bit too eagerly.

Astarion was in the upstairs study, going through correspondence.
There was the usual flurry of frantically phrased quest petitions, most of them entirely uninteresting. There was an invitation to speak at the Ravenguard memorial. There was a letter written on birch bark, detailing a study finding that wild Deep Rothe populations were returning to sustainable levels in the Underdark for the first time since seven thousand starving vampires arrived there. Wasn't that nice. He knew a couple of druids and rangers who would be happy about that.
Someone knocked at the study door. He looked up.
