Summary
“Are you going to kill me now?” his Arthur asks, shocking them both into another moment of tense, breathless apprehension. The question lingers in the air, Arthur’s hand remains inside that bag, and John’s eyes remain fixed on the other’s face. The other Arthur meets them with just about the same indifference he always has. Until at last, his eyes shift over to their bag as well.
“Are you?” he asks, and John can feel the way his friend’s fingers tighten around the cool metal of that gun, itching for that trigger, contemplating the question. It really would be so easy for him, wouldn’t it? To pull it out of that bag and aim it at his chest, knowing that John would not dare try to stop him, even if he wants to.

Summary
The door is open a crack, just as they’d left it, and he pushes it the rest of the way.
Blond curls barely peek out over the rim of the porcelain tub and, without the roar of the faucet, gentle splashing can be heard reverberating off the tile floor.
Blegh, too much white, these bathrooms. Too white and too bright and far too easy to stain.
She looks happy enough. Content, even; no concern whatsoever marring her round face. Large cerulean eyes meet his and the splashing halts. She stares at him for a long time, long enough that he feels his legs itch from antsiness.
“Hello.”
The greeting startles him for a fraction of a second, like he’s watching a kitten amble innocently into shark-infested waters. But he’s proud to say he recovers quickly.
“Why, hello there, kiddo!”

Summary
As long as he’s known Arthur – as long as he’s hated and tolerated and liked and loved him – John has wanted his own body. An identity all his own. When he and Arthur find a way to make it happen, it should be perfect. It needs to be perfect. But Arthur still can’t see, and John makes some unfortunate discoveries about his new body, and they’re both having a hell of a time of it. They aren’t alone, but it’s hard to remember that when you don’t share the same moral frame anymore. Hard, but not impossible.

Summary
But things really were going smoothly, and they really were beginning to settle into their respective bodies, even with the occasional road bump. Even if there was still quite a lot John needed to learn about the world now that he was an active participant in it—social niceties and clothing and keeping up appearances.
Yes, he had to wear shoes.
Yes, he had to keep his napkin in his lap.
Yes, he had to wait for the cab to pull up to the curb instead of running into the middle of the fucking road to fetch one himself and Arthur, why have you never done this before—
And, goddamn it all, he needed to stop touching him.

It looks like the entity and Arthur have to leave Arkham in order to solve their problem. Fine, it isn't as if the entity has any say in the matter, but Arthur insists they have to make a stop elsewhere first. Though Arthur initially tries to disguise the reason for their visit, it eventually becomes clear: he has to say goodbye to his young daughter, Faroe.

Summary
Even now, Arthur acquiesced to him wondering around a bit on his own, content to tuck into some lunch at a diner further in town, which was precisely how John found himself frozen before the double doors of Edith Mordent Memorial Hospital.
Alone.
This is why he had come here to begin with, wasn’t it? To check.
To check what, exactly? That she was still working here? That she hadn’t been fired after Arthur had stumbled from his room on trembling legs in the middle of the night, effectively proving the ineptitude of the hospital’s staff and security? That she hadn’t been injured or possessed or devoured by some otherworldly creature left in their wake?
That she would remember him?
John grasped the delusion by the tail before it could carry him away with it. That’s all it was. A delusion cleverly disguised as a dream.
So why the fuck was he entertaining it?

Summary
He flexed his toes on the beige carpeting, the fibers tickling his skin. He had so much skin. It was darker than Arthur’s by a couple shades, less a milky white and more a chestnut brown. His hands were larger than Arthur’s, too, but the fingers were the slightest bit shorter.
All ten of them.
All his.
Just like his feet. Just like his eyes, and his arms, and his legs, and his hair. He had hair now, incessantly tickling him where it fell against his collarbone in dark waves, drooping in front of his face with every shift of his head.
Everything belonged to him and him alone. Just like he’d wanted.
So why did that thought make him sick to his stomach?

Gradually, who Arthur was came out. In the way he dealt with death. The way he talked to kids. The way he steered clear of certain cases.
Parker would ask him about it only every so often and, as much as he was a bit of a hard-ass, he knew what it looked like when he pushed Arthur the wrong way. He was a sensitive soul. Parker knew not to push.

Do it, Kayne. He pulled them from the ruins of his being, offering up those crumbling bricks of assertion to lay with the prized gold that used to rest in his core.
“How, how could you-” Lie? Break? How could he betray again and again like a drunkard stumbling back to the bar each time he swore to leave?
“Ah, once a monster, eh, Artie?” A laugh like machine gun fire. “Alright, close your eyes, er, whoever has them now.” He raised his hand, fingers poised to snap.

Summary
John and Arthur are hired to investigate a string of disappearances from a large wooded park north of Arkham with only one connecting factor: all the missing persons are children, aged two to twelve. Parents reported nothing strange, save for some drawings tacked up on trees, but one claimed to see a tall, thin man in a jet black suit…the pair have their suspicions.

It's the nebulous future, after all the gods and their blasphemies have blown over, and somehow, John and Arthur have gotten away with their lives relatively intact. They rent a small apartment in downtown Arkham, confident they will not be recognized by anyone important enough--or powerful enough--to ruin what they have scraped together. All told, it could definitely be worse.

Summary
Why did you leave the Dreamlands? Before becoming bound to this flesh, before taking this name, ‘John’, you told me that, as the King, you exited your realm to enter this one. Why?
He looks at them again, through Arthur’s eyes. All the pretty lights in the sky. The stars. Planets. Galaxies.
To find meaning in a world of indifference. Purpose in a sense of chaos. A limit after infinite suffering. As an act of mercy instead of cruelty.
And light in an ocean of darkness.

With Arthur asleep by the fire, John reflects on what it means to be left behind. And just why he's so afraid of the dark.

Summary
“Alright,” Arthur says, and begins to detail brief stories of their recent adventures. John begins to press the keys at random, simply tapping along in time with Arthur’s words until he believes that was what John was typing. Noel tries his best not to laugh - but a small chuckle escapes him and Arthur’s head snaps up to look at him. “What?”
“Nothin’, nothin’. Just got a bit of a cough, that’s all.” Noel says, grinning. He winks at John before Arthur can turn his head back around.

Summary
There had been times, there, in the beginning of their acquaintanceship with one another, that Arthur would have liked nothing more than to rend the King’s fragment from the fabric of his psyche and have his own goddamn eyes returned to him. He would have done anything to make it so, even if that meant the suffering of John before he had ever had the chance to receive the name.
And now he had both.
For some reason, some god had smiled down upon him for the first time in his fucking life and he was able to stumble out of hell with all five senses and that second soul safely housed in its own flesh.
Like a fucking miracle.
He only wished his part of the miracle didn’t sting so violently.

Summary
It hadn’t been that first day, or that first week, but it had become apparent quickly, all the same.
This wasn’t his old life, just as he wasn’t the same Arthur Lester who had taken strolls with Bella through these very streets or carried a smaller body upon his shoulders, tiny hands clinging to his neck.
He was fundamentally Changed.
He knew this, of course. He had known it for a long time now, but nothing had reminded him so violently of that fact until he had been made aware of one specific bodily need and its damnably contradictory desire to reject nearly every attempt to satiate it. The existence of which led him to the one uphill battle he should have fucking foreseen:
Food.
