In the span of a few weeks, Europe is taken over by a new disease, which makes those infected by it violent, impulsive — and hungry. When their town finally collapses, Penelope, Odysseus and Telemachus have to find a way to reunite with each other and escape back to Ithaca, one of the last safe places in Greece, before their only ride sails off and leaves them for dead.

He swallowed again and licked his lips. Being verbal was usually a challenge to him, but Inosuke forced himself anyway. She always felt a surge of pride that he tried so hard for her. And a tiny, mean part of her also loved to watch him struggle. Just for her.

It reminded him, oddly, of the early days after they had met, with Victor growing more distant the harder Eli tried to retain his interest. Eli flattened his frown and leaned forward in his chair, elbows braced on his knees. “She’s asked me to consider spending the holidays with them.”
This time, Victor’s shift in focus was noticeable. “Did she?” The question was accompanied by a raised brow and straightened posture, clear markers of piqued curiosity.
“I don’t think that I will.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
Victor's eyes tracked Eli’s fingers, wrapping around the glass, and then the bob of his throat as he swallowed. “A pity,” he noted. “I know how much you enjoy playing pretend.”
