When Dallas texts him, I’m flying in Tuesday, getting in at 11:45, Shane thinks of all the things he might do instead, alone. He thinks there is a world in which he could say, I can’t today, but the text is not a question, the ticket is already bought, Kent never asks him if he’s welcome first. Kent picks up and flies to another city, because he knows he’s welcome, he knows Shane will let him inside. There was a moment, back in September, when Shane might have asked himself if he wanted this—is this the man you want to sleep with? Is this the way you want to spend your time? Are you having fun? It doesn’t matter. This is the person who wants to be with him.He wonders if this is how Ilya felt about him. Impassive.
Or: After an unexpected encounter just before the start of the 2016-17 season, Shane falls into a casual relationship with Dallas Kent. He doesn't meet Rose Landry. He doesn't set foot in Ilya's house outside of Boston. (There is no tuna meltdown.) He stops waiting for Ilya Rozanov to text him back. It's fine, until it isn't.

Shane has never seen Ilya this angry. The look on his face is nothing short of murderous. The beer in his hand is close to shattering into pieces with how aggressively Ilya is gripping it. His jaw clenched so hard that Shane thinks his teeth will crack.
But under all the anger and embarrassment clawing at his features, Shane sees something else lying underneath.
Pure, raw, unfiltered, guilt.

The thought of never playing again, the thought of being shunted to the omega leagues, where it's less about hockey and more about mating rituals for the top A-lister alphas in Hollywood, was earth-shattering. Shane couldn’t imagine that, couldn't imagine his life like that, without hockey, without the ice, without, without, without. At ten, the decision of infertility versus the prospects of a long, fruitful career on the ice in the MLH was a no-brainer. Kids, family, pack, a mate, none of that would matter if Shane never got to step foot on the ice again.
Except it does matter. It does matter because now he’s twenty-three, and there is someone else. There is someone else. There's someone else, but not really, because they didn’t kiss. It doesn't mean anything. He's all alone, and it's all one-sided.
