Jayce sighs as he spins around on his stool, tired eyes staring at the cold ceiling of their lab, “Your silence is gonna drive me insane.” He says, spreading his arms wide to emphasize the word.
Viktor still does not speak. Jayce groans. “Come on! Loosen up a bit, V!” He looks at his work again, trying to concentrate. “Actually, nevermind. I'm sure I can find the answer myself, no need for your help.” Only silence echoes his words, Jayce rolls his eyes.

When he and his mom were first rescued, he'd thought the cold would be the worst of it.
It wasn't. It was warming up again.
It was a sort of burning, in his toes and fingers and face. Hot inside and cold outside and hot again. His skin tingled where it didn't burn, cycles of red and white.
He remembered what they'd told him, when they were back home again. That he was lucky.
Even then, he'd known it wasn't luck. It was his mom, and it was magic.
That was all it ever was.
His mom isn’t here, and magic is a horrible, cursed thing.

Summary
Turning to see a gun pointed directly at her head was terrifying—but watching Jayce collapse with blood pouring from his back and his shoulder, staining both his coat and the stage he once delivered speeches from red, is somehow worse. A permanent reminder of what happened here. And that would be the point, wouldn’t it? To remind them of the losses they already suffered, and then the people they would lose today.
“Jayce,” Mel says, and there’s a shift in her mother’s expression. It’s not quite annoyance, not quite anger, but a distaste that twists her lips into a grimace. Mel knows she doesn’t like Jayce—that she thinks he weakens her, that he influences her far too much in far too many ways. Ways that she doesn’t approve of. “Is he alright? Has anyone seen him?”
After the attack at the memorial, Mel sets off in search of Jayce.

Jayce doesn’t realize how shitty he feels until Mel collapses into his arms and he can’t support her weight—his knee buckles underneath him, and its all he can do to drag her closer to him to protect her from the hard floor of the council’s chambers as they fall.
Mel only seems half-conscious, shaking in his arms as he lifts one hand from her side to cradle the back of her head. “We’re okay,” he murmurs, shifting both knees underneath him despite the way his leg screams in agony; he pulls her into his lap and against his chest. His voice is rough and strained, more a wheeze than anything else. Jayce can still feel metal fingers wrapped around his neck, around his wrist. “It’s okay. You’re okay."
