Summary
When Balinor found out that Uther was going to send Knight's to Ealdor, looking for him. He asked an old friend to look after Hudith until the coast was clear. Galahad did so without hesitation. But then he found out Hudith was pregnant and then some druids told them vaguely of some destiny that the child had.
All Galahad knew was that Merlyn needed more protection from Uther and so he claimed her as his flesh and blood. Balinor was still of nobleblood and it was the least he could do. He just didn't expect to get so attached.
Now follow Merlyn's story where she had a little more training and a little more of a moral guidance from an early age and moving to camelot at a slightly earlier age.

“I’m nothing now. I don’t have any powers. You’ve taken everything, I’m just like everybody else. I’m nothing.” The look on her face when she told him that... she didn’t look anywhere near the Adalind he knows.
This Adalind is broken, scared, and full of grief.

She would go to college where her mother did, graduate top of her class, become a doctor and maybe get married and have a couple of kids. So far, she was sticking to the plan. Until she found out she was pregnant at age twenty-one and the father of her baby was none other than her best friend's brother, Bellamy Blake.
Actually, scratch that, Clarke was nowhere near her ideal future.
