When news of the war's end reached the South Pole it was too little too late, at least for Sokka, Katara and their family. At two years later, Kya's death still left them floundering on a cracked foundation as they struggled to cope with growing up without their mother. But the rest of the world rejoiced, and time moved on.
Then, eight years later, the Fire Nation returned to the shores of the Southern Water Tribe, this time bearing a letter from the Fire Lord himself. A request was made for an Omega of high standing to be sent back to the Fire Nation capital of Caldera with the intent of being wed to the Crown Prince. In exchange, gifts of valuable resources would be sent back to the Southern Tribe at regular intervals over the course of a several years.
The only stipulation was the Omega could not be older than the Alpha in question, and at 20 years of age, Sokka fit the criteria. When faced with the possibility of bringing his homeland prosperity for perhaps the first time in decades, well, the answer was clear. Sokka would have to swallow any distaste he still felt for the Fire Nation and allow himself to be wed to a complete stranger, thousands of miles from his home, perhaps never to return.

Fifteen year-old Haruka Sakura runs away from his hell of a foster home. He passes multiple cities on foot, before entering the final town with a rude greeting from a giant sign saying something about BoFurin. He doesn't know, doesn't bother reading it much further.
He's here in this stranger town to start a new life for himself, despite knowing nobody and the locations of anywhere. He's expecting to have to deal with everything alone, as per usual, but a certain group of high schoolers and an insane woman who works at a café show him what it's like to be genuinely cared about.
Except, Sakura can't deal with this kind of attention. It's too overbearing.
