    Summary

It’s just that Meryl is only bleeding because she got caught in the crossfire downstairs, in a skirmish that’d led to an outright explosion of violence—and of course, with Vash right at the centre of it. Where else would he be? Meryl will give credit where credit is due that this time Vash hadn’t been the catalyst, but he dove headfirst into the situation as always and soon drew the attention onto him. Meryl only got involved when she noticed his cheeks starting to feather—and maybe the lingering panic of seeing Vash’s down had made her sloppy, because she’d gotten caught by a stray bullet that should’ve been a breeze to dodge. Would’ve been, ordinarily.

It leaves Meryl on a bit of a time crunch, because with the reveal of Vash’s abilities, he and the priest are probably going to leave within the afternoon—which means that while Meryl is here, she has to tend to herself and pack her things and be ready to head out tonight.

    ---

Meryl ends up with a bullet wound after a fight, and tries to handle it herself. Vash takes responsibility.

    Summary

“It’s okay. It actually made me think that I wanted to ask you something.” Meryl finally resurfaces, slightly flushed now, her fringe sticking up like she caught a charge from rubbing her face against Vash’s chest. Vash can’t help an endeared grin, and can no less stop himself from patting down her hair than stop the suns from rising every morning. He lets the soft strands glide through his knuckles, then marvels at the way Meryl sighs and leans into his curled fingers. “You’re distracting me again… Do you have to do that every time I’m trying to ask you a question?”

“Nobody’s stopping you,” Vash murmurs. Meryl’s lower lip juts out, but she doesn’t seem truly incensed. She snatches his hand from her face and presses her lips against it in a furious kiss, then sandwiches it between her cheek and the pillow.

“Focus,” Meryl insists. Vash’s eyes zero in on her face. He focuses. Meryl’s lip twitches at the corner. “Would you tell me about her? Rem.”

    Summary

This isn’t the first time he’s pushed himself too hard and had to bail on Meryl specifically. He’s not sure why this always ends up happening with her, why he can’t just force his stupid shrimp brain to prioritise her like a normal fucking person—he keeps telling himself he wants to put her first, and then the next group of needy people shows up and Vash’s legs are moving before his brain can. He’d been looking forward to the date, and he knows that she’s been, too. He’s bound to get a big lecture from her now that he’s up—and there’s a cowardly part of Vash that’s tempted to shut his eyes and fake sleep a little longer so he can delay it—but he’s at least grown a little stronger than that. He keeps his eyes open and manages a weak smile for Meryl in response. He’ll take whatever he gets from here.

“Hey,” Meryl says gently; of course she wouldn’t just launch into it. “How are you feeling? You should drink some water.”

Vash pushes it too hard in the days leading up to a date with Meryl, and suffers the consequences. (Though not the ones he's expecting, necessarily.)

Rukia Kuchiki wasn't expecting this today. She also wasn't expecting things to feel different with Ichigo after reuniting with him after seventeen months apart. Honestly though, she should have known. Now that she does, she knows she can't ignore what she feels. That still doesn't stop her from trying.

    Summary

The sound of footsteps faded in slowly near her as she continued to wail quietly. The footsteps stopped, and Lauma slowly looked up to a face as pale as the moon with golden eyes and dark eye bags, and hair as indigo as the night sky. The person, or rather, man was looking at her with an unreadable expression.

He spoke with a gravely and deep voice, “Sometimes it’s hard to believe in some things, no matter how hard we desperately try to deny it.” Lauma found it hard to find his words true but wondered more so about him and his abrupt manner, a bright lantern hanging by his side. She answered, curious but not accusatory, “Why have you come all the way here, lightkeeper?”
