Will could not help the question that burst from his lips, it had been ricocheting around his brain like a stray tennis ball and was simultaneously causing him the most excitement, distress and exhilaration he had felt in his entire life.
“Are you my husband?” he blurted. Mike blinked in surprise.
“What?”
Will lost his nerve slightly. He wondered if he had been horribly wrong about this, and maybe in this strange timeline he was just a friend staying over and maybe he’d made a mistake and the daughter wasn’t really his daughter and—
Will faltered. “Um, I — well, I just thought you were — I mean, you are my husband, right?”
Mike looked very alarmed. He was staring at Will as though he had grown a second head.
“Obviously…?” he said, “Are you feeling alright? Did your mom make you try her D-I-Y coffee again?”
When nineteen-year-old Will Byers wakes up to find himself in his forty-three-year-old body, he must—with no experience whatsoever—play the part of world-renowned freelance painter, father of two very troublesome teenagers, and most strangely of all: Mike Wheeler’s husband.

Summary
They all know that there are bad days. Days when Will wakes up screaming from nightmares, days when he won’t really be there, his mind somewhere else, just floating through the hours. Days when he won’t speak to anyone, can’t speak, can’t make his mind form the words, trapped in some other place.
On those days he often locks himself in his room, spends hours painting dark shapes, slimy hands and vines that crawl and taketaketake.
Dustin will leave food at his door for him; Lucas makes sure to be loud in the room next to his, moving things, singing along to shitty music, making sure Will knows where he is. Mike will knock every once in a while and speak to him through the door. Sometimes Will lets him inside, and Mike will sit with him and softly talk about anything and everything, read comics to him while Will spends time locked in his own mind.
Even after everything, there are still days when it’s hard for Will to get out of bed, when the nightmares haunt him and he’s trapped inside his own mind. Mike is there for every single one of those days.
Or: trauma doesn't just go away because we want it to.

A lot had happened in a year, they had both graduated from NYU with their degrees, Mike in English and Will in Fine Art. Mike was a published author, Will had sold 4 paintings to a gallery near the apartment, Mike did some interviews on tv and the radio, and Mike proposed to Will on Halloween night, and Will had said yes.
They had decided that being 24 and newly engaged that they were adult enough to take on a major holiday, and wanted to tell their families about the engagement still, so they called up their mothers and siblings and told them they wanted to host Thanksgiving.
