“Oh I’m sure they’ll be just heart broken.” The man in black steps forward into the doorway of the cell and one of the shadow men steps forward to place a stool behind him so that he can settle, grinning, onto it. “Unfortunately if you want them to find out anything you’re going to need a tongue for talking or fingers for writing, and well…” The man flips his knife casually from one hand to the other, “You won’t be leaving here with either one.”

There are rumours that this beast has a sentimental side - they say he has been seen using one of his wings to shield a patch of tiny white flowers from a hail storm.
Hua Cheng? It was a good name - Xie Lian felt the urge to smile. He liked the story about the flowers. He had always liked flowers himself, had always cherished the flowers that his people threw at him during festivals and parades.

Hua Cheng raised his brows. The bottle? Sure enough, when he followed the red string back outside, it led him right back to the pile of scraps, disappearing into the narrow neck of the bottle, which was lying abandoned on the grass.
He carefully picked it up and peered inside. There at the bottom was Xie Lian, looking up at him with a mix of resignation and embarrassment on his face.
And oh, what a small face. Hua Cheng shook himself. This wasn’t the time to get distracted by how cute his tiny gege was.
“I found you,” he said softly, curling both hands protectively around the bottle.

Summary
Xie Lian is a precocious child who has a habit of sneaking off to explore alone when possible. Twice, it led him to life changing discoveries. The first time, he saw how his people lived and knew it was his mission as their (future) ruler to ease their hardship as much as possible.
The second, he found San Lang.
Fast friends, the human prince and dragon drew close enough to capture the attention of a dark force in Xian Le, leading to their separation. Heartbroken without his San Lang, Xie Lian nurtures grief and kindness in his heart, vowing to avenge his friend's death.
Nearly eight years later, no one is prepared for when High King Hua Cheng sends a delegation to Xian Le from the newly-formed Ghost Kingdom, least of all Xie Lian.
He figures out what to do quickly enough, though.
