Summary
Tonight’s darkness is a different kind, and the love Rust has for Marty is a different kind of affection from the love he found in the revelation of death. That love was like slipping into a warm saltwater pool—buoyant, pure, and infinite. This love with Marty has a heartbeat. Not so much in the sense that it will stop one day, but in that it’s a big part of what keeps him alive.

Summary
Rust hums something wordless in his throat, fingers following the delicate line of Ghost’s spine. He swallows before his eyes crack back open, peering at Marty through the light coming off the lamp and Christmas tree.
“Had somewhere I was planning to be tomorrow,” he says, and then looks away again, throat bobbing in place. “Was thinking about making the drive out to Houston.”

Summary
It was a Tuesday evening on January the third, just past eight o'clock, when the call that would irreversibly alter Marty's path through this life patched in over the crackling police issue car radio. The moon was only half risen, slipping in between the clouds and shining a cool light, bright, and white as dead bleached bone down upon the chilled, dew moistened streets. It was just past eight, Marty remembers, because eight was when the rerun of the college basketball game aired and he was pissed he was out looking for some woman murdering asshole instead of back in his cozy apartment with a beer in his hand.
In twenty four minutes, he would no longer care.

What it says on the tin, trying my hand at a multi chapter thing. Spans across the timeline and should work out to be a six parter. Might work out to be eventual Rust/Marty.

Summary
Zachary Dubois was shaking. He was sweaty. His greasy hair was tied back into a messy, varnishy brown ponytail, eyes cast down to dart over his greasy fingers that perched upon the table, haloed in a line of condensation. Rust knew he was guilty the moment he walked into the room, knew he was guilty from the paperwork alone that he'd skimmed out in the hallway not twenty minutes gone, could smell the sweet-rot stench of his guilt like blood in the water, but Geraci needed a confession, and that fat fuck couldn't inspire a salmon to spawn or the sun to set, let alone pull information out of a teenager. So here Rust was, feeling a bead of sweat stroke down the side of his neck like an icy finger. He wouldn't shudder, and he wouldn't wipe it away, not with Rummy's beady little eyes watching him from the other side of the two way mirror. He'd sooner die.

Summary
He should’ve taken his pills an hour ago but they still sit in their little shot glass tumbler on the coffee table next to a glass of water that sweat itself to death before he so much as touched it. Rust’ll hear about that in the morning, maybe, though he’ll have to watch Marty throw accusatory looks in the direction of the handful of pain medication first, like it’d somehow gone and betrayed them both. He’ll probably fuck off to the kitchen at first light and mash them into applesauce with the tagalong threat of a good spoon-feeding, but Rust hasn’t pushed him that far.
At least not yet.

Summary
At North Shore they called it repetition compulsion: the desire to throw himself into a ravine because at least he recognized the landscape. They warned him that he would do this again, and again, and again if he wasn’t careful. “It’s like you’re always bracing for a fight,” Laurie said once, “and if it doesn’t happen, you create one.” Sophia’s blood on the driveway, Marty’s blood in the parking lot, Psyche with her goddamn lamp, poking at a good thing until it’s scorched and screaming. There’s only one story, the oldest: “You climb a tree too high for you,” his pop said, as he passed Rust a bottle of whiskey and began to splint his arm, “you best be prepared to fall and get hurt.”

Summary
Some little scene sketches from early in Marty and Rust's partnership, and parts of the 1995 investigation. Not in chronological order.
In Louisiana Rust creates his own structure. His work is necessary and not overtly cruel to the larger human organism of which he is a part. He is entitled to the things that allow him to do the work: mattress, cigarettes, books, shoes.
He is not entitled to Marty but has ended up with him anyway. This will backfire.
