    His fingers stretched and closed the distance, circling around the warm expanse of Bucky's downturned palm, squeezing against the soft skin like a prayer.

    "I love you, Buck."

    Steve breathed. The machines hummed. Bucky's chest rose and fell.

    "I’ve loved you since before I even knew what the hell that meant. Since the day you found me in that alley. And maybe you don’t remember all of it, maybe some of it’s jumbled up with all the pain and noise and things they forced into your head, but…it’s always been there. Me and you. I think maybe, some part of you always knew. ”

    Or in other words, a story of boys who always loved each other and of men who try to remember.
    Post-Winter Soldier, Civil War Canon Divergence. Steve will do whatever it takes to bring Bucky back home to Brooklyn.

    Steve gets out of the hospital in two days, but just barely. “I’m fine,” he tells Sam, Nurse Eunjung and the phalanx of doctors assigned to make sure Captain America didn’t bleed out and die and get bad PR all over their nice clean hospital. “I have an advanced healing factor. It’s fine. See? I’m standing.”

    “That is not standing,” Sam tells him.

    “You’re bending the IV stand,” Nurse Eunjung adds pointedly. “Let go and sit down, they don’t grow on trees.”
