Hob definitely had other plans today, that didn’t involve watching his oldest friend sleep for 8 hours, but there were worse ways to spend a day.
Or Dream considers Death’s story about spending one day every century as a living thing and meeting herself at the end of the day for perspective. It leads him to wonder what it might be like to experience the Dreaming as a dreamer. But that requires sleeping in the Waking World, a vulnerable position for a human. He drops in on Hob to ask him a favor: to be nearby and…keep an eye on his physical manifestation in the Waking World as he visits the Dreaming as a single consciousness.

Hob sustains a mortal wound when he instinctively blocks an attack meant for Dream. Before this, Dream has never been a witness to any of Hob’s “deaths.” Even though it’s only temporary, the shock and sorrow immediately overwhelm him, and he burns. Everything.

Somehow Lucienne has found herself in the middle of repairing the professional relationship between Lord Morpheus and the dream of being naked in public.

He rushes to campus to see for himself and help however he can, but what seems like a very straight forward incident involving a famous novelist having an apparent psychotic episode raises a lot more questions than Hob was prepared to ask.
