Karlach lets out a sigh. “He doesn’t love you.”
“I know,” Wyll says, because he does know that, even if his stupid body doesn’t.
His body is an animal that still thinks Astarion is his mate, even years later. Still searches for his scent in a crowded room, feels anxious when they aren’t together, purrs contentedly when they are pressed skin to skin. But that isn’t love; it’s just biology. A mating bond that refuses to fade entirely—aided in no small part by Wyll’s inability to keep his hands and his knot to himself whenever they are together.
Wyll Ravengard loved Astarion. Years later, he tries not to. Though their relationship ended the night Astarion ascended, Wyll still finds himself drawn back again and again to the omega, his body and heart convinced they’re still mates, even if his brain knows they’re not. Astarion lures him close with his smile, taunts him with his scent. Unable to resist, Wyll goes to him, repeating a cycle that always ends in regret and may one day lead to his ruin.

After defeating Cazador in his lair, Astarion decides to ascend. In trading his friends, his love, and supposedly his soul for the freedom he was so long denied, Astarion finds that the consequences of his actions are too vast to handle. Naturally, he begins a mostly one-sided rivalry with Wyll, determined to outlive the damned hero and win at last. He resorts to sleeping through the remainder of Wyll's life - but the time after proves to be a harder battle than when Wyll still lived. How ever will he manage eternity?

Wyll Ravengard attends the ball hoping to find someone new amongst the same tired sons and daughters of the aristocracy. They are all so incredibly dull. Then he spies an unfamiliar figure on the balcony and swears he will get him to dance before the unmasking.

As Lord Dekarios attempts to adjust to life in sleepy Ravengard Valley, dark mysteries unfold, and no matter how hard everyone tries to escape their individual pasts, they always come back in the end.

It isn’t weird if they both do it—that has been their sort of unspoken rule these past few years together.
After Astarion and Wyll each came clean about their own less than romantic reasons for sleeping together, Wyll suggests that maybe they would be better off as friends. That’s completely, totally fine with Astarion. Sure, he’s in love with the man, but it’s fine.
Their friendship starts to take a turn after Astarion learns how to transform into a bat, however. As a bat, he is soft, cute, helpless, and… he doesn’t hate that. As a bonus, Wyll also seems helpless to resist petting Astarion’s fluffy new fur.
Maybe this can be their new dynamic, then. By night, they will travel the Sword Coast as a pair of dashing adventurers.
