    Summary

The world has finally caught up to what John has always known - Sherlock Holmes is extraordinary. A hero. Admirers flock to him, strangers sing his praises, and John knows it’s only a matter of time before Sherlock realizes he belongs to something bigger than the life they’ve built together.

Sherlock doesn’t see it that way. He doesn’t trust public adoration, doesn’t believe the world’s sudden love for him will last. The only opinion that matters to him is John’s. And when John finally understands that - really understands it - he realizes he doesn’t have to lose Sherlock at all.

He just has to be brave enough to keep him.

(Or: The world falls in love with Sherlock Holmes, but Sherlock Holmes was in love with John Watson all along.)

Sherlock sketching John on a boring, rainy afternoon.

This was written for a prompt on BBC Sherlock’s Make Me a Monday. The prompt was Sherlock as his famous artist relative painting John, who was a French soldier. That didn’t really strike a cord with me, but what did was the idea of present day Sherlock sketching John on a boring afternoon. The prompt is: Prompt from Rachelindeed on The Game is On’s Make Me a Monday #59: “I would love to see a story that casts Sherlock as Vernet and John as a soldier he paints, either in Paris or in the Crimea or both.” I didn’t exactly do that but I hope she likes it.

    Summary

After many years managing the ranch he shares with his younger brother Thomas, and a year working with his best friend and right hand man John, Will received the shocking news of Thomas’s marriage to Daisy. Her son, Jim, comes to spend the summer on the ranch. The young man appears to have an interest in learning how to be a Cowboy. Jim also has a clear interest in Will. John, however, suspects a darker motive for the boy’s actions. Will is not a man to accept “protection”. What is in store for John?
This story is a fix-it for the ending of The Power of the Dog. With Sherlock as Will and the introduction of John Watson as his best friend. Having a friend, somebody to love, could have saved Phil from himself, from his behaviour and his pain. In this story, Will has a person who loves him and looks out for him. Here, they will have a happy ending.
