“Buy you a drink?”
Tony lifted his gaze from the bartender’s and turned to the man who had slid up next to him. He towered over Tony and Tony rather thought there’d be a significant height difference even if Tony hadn’t been sitting.
“Wow,” he said, not quite sure if he was commenting on the approach or the man himself. He really was something else. “Straight in there, huh? No niceties.”
“Oh, I think you’ll find I can be very nice,” the man said, voice dropping and eyes sweeping over Tony’s body in the least subtle way.

“I don’t know. I think Andrew made reservations. I have to brush off my suit apparently.”
Tony smiled at the look on Steve’s face. Everyone knew how much Steve hated dressing up and having to put on suits to battle with ties and cuff links. If Tony had had the chance, their first date would have been at some family-run diner where the dress code was jeans and sneakers, maybe a blazer if they were feeling slightly adventurous. They’d have their own meals and then Steve would still be hungry but Tony wouldn’t, so Steve would order a dessert that he’d let Tony pick at when he pouted because it looked so good and he should have ordered one.
But that would never happen. Because Steve was dating Andrew.

“Hello?” Tony snapped and he didn’t even have to fake the agitation in his voice. He was genuinely exhausted and he didn’t like to be interrupted on the verge of sleep when it happened so rarely. “Hello?”
“Oh, uh, hi? I - is Nat there?”
“Nat? Who the fuck is this?”
There was a short pause before someone cleared their throat. “Sorry, sorry. I thought... I met Nat tonight? We got chatting in a bar.”

“What’s this?”
Steve turned at the sound of Tony’s voice and paled when he saw what Tony was holding. He’d almost forgotten he’d even bought it, but there it was in the cold light of day.
“Steve?”
Steve swallowed when Tony’s eyebrows lifted. When another moment passed in silence, Tony’s eyebrows lifted even higher. “Well?”
“It’s a ring.”
“Yes, I can tell that much,” Tony said witheringly. He held the piece of metal up and Steve swallowed when he noticed that it wasn’t even shiny enough to catch the light as it was thrust forward. “What I would like to know is why it is in your sock drawer and not on my finger?”

Summary
“Really,” Tony said. He’d only been a dad, – well, only known he was a dad for the eight months it had been since Peter’s biological mom and step-dad had passed – but he was learning very quickly. Rule number one was no unnecessary tears. “Places are still open on Christmas Eve, right?”
Peter shrugged again. “I don’t know.”
“Right. You’re six. What you would know?”
“I know you need a star,” Peter said, smile dropping back to a frown. “Bet you haven’t got one of those.”
“A star?” Tony let go of Peter’s hand and placed his bag on the floor before he grabbed an unsuspecting Peter under the armpits and threw him onto his shoulders. “What do I need a star for? You’re tiny – you can fit on my tree!”
He was rewarded with a high-pitched squeal, which gave way to a wonderful laugh that Tony hadn’t heard since he’d picked his son up.
“No, Tony! Let me go; I’m too big for a tree. No!”
