Pressured by Pepper and Rhodey to move on, Tony Stark has a brilliant (and terrible) idea: to convince the Sorcerer Supreme, Stephen Strange, to enter into a fake relationship of convenience. Rules are established, dinners are arranged, and photos are taken.
It seemed like the perfect plan to keep the curious away. But between nights of pasta at the Tower, visits to the park, and battles against interdimensional monsters, the line between pretense and reality begins to blur. When Stephen is injured in battle, Tony realizes that perhaps the only lie he was telling was to himself.
Or: The one where Tony and Stephen pretend to date until they forget it was all an act.

He knew Peter was an... anxious kid, to say the least. He knew he'd been through more than any kid deserved to at his age - or any age, really. He knew Peter wasn't used to being open about his powers, or his spider-manning, or just - life in general. But Tony had hoped that by now, after all they'd been through together, peter might feel a bit... safer, around him.
Alas, (really, Tony?) there wasn’t much he could do about that but stick around. Be supportive. Remind Peter he was there to talk whenever.

Tony hadn’t been completely lying. He did have a problem, one that involved Peter, which is exactly why he can’t help Tony solve the problem. But trying to hide that from Peter was quickly becoming another problem.
Tony didn’t want to worry Peter, but he wasn’t sure how to go about his problem without worrying Peter.
Allowing Peter to keep coming and going like normal wasn’t working, as evidenced by Peter immediately clocking that something was wrong. But now, if he were to suddenly put some distance between them and suddenly stop seeing him, it would only make Peter worry more and probably assume that he did something wrong, and then both of them would be spiraling.
Tony wasn’t sure what to do.
That wasn’t true. He knew exactly what he should do. The whole problem could easily be solved with just a quick sentence.
(Or: Tony FINALLY realizes he loves Peter as his own, and is slowly working up to directly admitting it to Peter.
