Sans can't know about it. It's not that he doesn't trust him, no. It's just that Papyrus knows Sans wouldn't like the idea of his brother trying not to eat for a whole month.

Hope can be a difficult thing in the face of adversity. Hope can be painful.
For some, it's easier to let go of the pain of what could be different and focus on the wall of pain that is. For others, hope is needed to hold back the landslide behind a fragile wall, so they can keep moving forward and make that hope into the reality they want to see.
