When the door swooshed open, he half thought he had been pranked or the chime had been malfunctioning, because he could see no one waiting for him on the other side of the entryway. Then a small sniffle drew his attention downward, and there at thigh-level he saw a pair of big blue eyes peering up at him, tears threatening to spill over.
