Summary
Mydei first hears of Phainon’s past one night by the fire.
On the outskirts of Okhema, a flask of ambrosia passes between them, the air heavy with silence. Liquor loosens Phainon’s lips and he speaks casually about destruction and loss and ruin. About a friend who ran with him through wheat fields he’ll never see again, and a mother who sang in a language no one speaks anymore.
He laughs as he tells Mydei that he aches to go back home — to his friends, his family. He laughs and laughs between sips of wine, like none of it means anything.
The end draws near. Mydei and Phainon find each other anyway.

The inside of the tent was hazy with heat, air thick with sweat and breath and the subtle scent of sex still clinging to the crumpled sleeping bag. The wind outside howled on, a low whisper against the insulated nylon walls, but it sounded far away now—tamed by the shelter they’d made for each other.
Phainon was boneless in Mydei’s arms, legs tangled together, with his head tucked beneath Mydei’s chin. His body hummed with the slow, pleasant throb of being thoroughly ruined, and his voice was down to a murmur.
“Don’t let me die of contentment,” he whispered.
“You’re not dying,” Mydei said, brushing damp curls away from his forehead.
“I might be,” Phainon argued faintly. “I think my bones melted. You melted me.”

Mydei hummed, and Phainon felt his lips curl into a small smile against his skin. "Something we can finally agree on."
"Six millenia...feels like we're just getting started." Phainon turned his head. It was still at a weird angle to steal a kiss, but something about the sloppy awkwardness of it made it all the more charming.
"We are," Mydei hummed against his lips. "Eternity is a long time."
