Summary
Tighnari’s jaw snaps shut. They both watch in silence as Al-Haitham, ritual worshiper of the daily workplace routine, a transcendently habitual creature set in his ways since the moment he accepted this job offer, reaches thoughtlessly into his desk organizer for a pen and instead comes up with three-quarters of a pastel blue crayon.
Al-Haitham pauses. He looks down at the crayon in his hand; then, at the document he was about to sign. Next, he casts his gaze across the rest of his desk, where it lands on a sheet of scratch-n-sniff stickers in place of his post-its and a heart-shaped hole punch replacing his stapler. His hand visibly twitches.
I will get you, he mouths at Kaveh. Then he puts down the crayon and signs the phrase without breaking eye contact, just to be thorough.
Good luck, moron, Kaveh signs back. Then he blows a kiss.
Al-Haitham and Kaveh have a totally normal and mature workplace prank war of totally normal and mature proportions.

Perhaps it is the rarity of his smiles that makes Kaveh want to chase them, keep the memory of them in his pocket for safekeeping. And of course, the urge to be near him is only to feel the warmth of humanity on his skin, to experience the life he once only had the privilege of seeing from a bird’s eye view. Warmth only washes over his weary heart at the sight of their keys entangled together because of its novelty, the image of mundanity and domesticity it suggests.
“Watch a movie with me,” he says, because he only has so long to be human. “Come on,” he adds when Al-Haitham looks up at him over his book, because despite how infuriating he can be sometimes, Al-Haitham’s witty remarks and petty comments make Kaveh feel just a little more alive.
In which Kaveh, a cupid, is burdened with the task of finding Al-Haitham someone to fall in love with. This proves to be exceedingly difficult, but only because Kaveh is looking in all the wrong places.

The toddler began to cry, and then he started to cough from trying to cry too hard, snot dripping down his face. Another adult came hurrying over to help him to his feet before they went inside to head, presumably, to the nurse’s office.
Loud, chaotic, dirty. Everything that went against Al-Haitham’s standards.
“Working here as what?” Kaveh blinked. “Like admin or something? That’s probably quiet and far enough from kids for you. Though—”
“No,” interrupted Al-Haitham. “I don’t.”
After getting fired from a prestigious architecture firm, Kaveh moves back to his hometown to raise his five-year-old brother only to find that an old college "acquaintance" is his little brother's kindergarten teacher.

The silence that follows confuses him for a moment, and then the shocked expressions mirrored from Tighnari’s face to Nilou’s bring Kaveh crashing unceremoniously down to reality.
“Oh,” he says. His friends are still staring at him. “Right, yeah. Al-Haitham and I broke up.”
After four years of dating, Kaveh and Al-Haitham break up.
Obviously, Kaveh is fine about it.

Kaveh has his hands full taking care of Alhaitham. Alhaitham is acting strangely, and he seems convinced that they’re in a relationship. Kaveh doesn't know how he's going to get out of this with his heart intact.
“I don’t remember anything about you,” Alhaitham admits. “Or him,” he nods at Cyno. “Or even my partner,” he says, gesturing at Kaveh.
Kaveh chokes on air. Partner?
“Ah. Was that supposed to be a secret?”
“We’re roommates!” Kaveh splutters.
“Right. ‘Roommates,’” Alhaitham says, with a smirk.

"Do you... live alone?" Kaveh asks, unable to help himself.
He doesn't even need to ask, Kaveh can feel the loneliness in this house in his bones. He wonders how Alhaitham is not crushed by this loneliness.
"I wouldn't invite you otherwise."
"Oh." He can't keep his mouth shut, an effect of the intoxication, otherwise Kaveh normally knows when to keep his mouth shut. "But isn't this place too big for one person to live in? It almost looks... lonely, if I dare to say."
"No, I like the extra space. I do not feel lonely, at all."
Alhaitham is not someone who is bothered by loneliness, or who is trying to cure his loneliness.

He said that, but he took the invitation and stepped into the branches, lifted comfortably off of the ground.
"I'm Kaveh," he introduced himself. "An architect and artist. A sick and starving one. Whatever you are, you've been a great comfort to me and I owe you thanks."
Looking back, Alhaitham is sure that introduction would have been very different if Kaveh had known Alhaitham would eventually speak back to him.

“It’s a love spell,” Kaveh repeated louder, his ears burning.
“Oh,” Alhaitham said simply. “That explains the crowd outside. Found yourself a cursed artefact, did you? By your worksite?”
Kaveh was so surprised that he forgot that he was supposed to be looking away. “How did you know?”
“Your current affliction matches the description of a certain lost ancient artefact. And it wasn’t a stretch to conclude you stumbled upon it at your worksite since that was literally where you said you were going earlier on,” Alhaitham replied calmly.
“... Right,” Kaveh said, hesitantly. “And you don’t feel anything? No sudden urge to proclaim your lo-liking for me or anything?”
Alhaitham flashed him a smirk, and Kaveh's heart stopped beating for a moment. “Why, would you like me to?”Kaveh is cursed to have everyone around him fall in love with him. Everyone except for Alhaitham, apparently.
