    Summary

There wasn't a single cloud in sight, but Jason couldn't see the stars anyway.

The lights of the city, floating like space junk all around him — coming from above, from below, from everywhere in a bewildering cacophony of brightness — prevented him from seeing them.

Maybe, if he was particularly lucky, Jason could squint the faded dot of the North Star, stubborn as it was to make itself noticed even in a starless city like Gotham. But it's not like he could check it out, either.

If he stopped to raise his face, even for a second, he'd be caught.

Or they're both Omegas, and they weren't even dating, so it wasn’t a Mating Run. It couldn't be.

    But—

    Oh.

Dean didn’t wait for the man to write anything else, storming out of the room and down the stairs. He didn’t stop at the information desk, ignoring Barbara calling his name as he headed for the exit. Strong fingers wrapped around his wrist. He twisted around, breaking the hold and glaring at the man.

    “Don’t fucking touch me.”

The man held up his hands. Amusement made his eyes brighter.

“Jason,” Barbara said as she wheeled over to them. “I told you to be gentle. Not bulldoze him.”

Jason, apparently, gave her the finger.

She snorted. “Dean, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to freak you out. Jason is my boyfriend’s little brother.”

Jason stiffened at the words and signed furiously at Barbara. She concentrated on what he was saying before rolling her eyes.

“Jason is not my boyfriend’s little brother. He is completely unrelated to my boyfriend and his whole family. He only puts up with me because I provide him with int—” she cut herself off. “Gossip.”

Jason crossed his arms like he was done with the conversation.

    Summary

He's heading home when he sees it.

He almost misses it— at first he thinks it's the wind shifting around the trash, the newspapers and wrappers. But it isn't. It's a small, filthy thing. His black-white coat matted to hell and beyond, blending in seamlessly with the garbage spill. A kitten.

He stands still as the kitten sniffs an overturned takeout tray, and paws it up. It's heartlessly bare. He can see the kitten's bony stature deflate—very human-like gesture. It's a shifter kitten.
