But it wasn’t true. He loved Lestat so much he sometimes felt like the weight of it crushed him. He could hardly breathe, sometimes, blindsided by his love for Lestat, could feel it swirling inside of him, trying to make its way out, ready to split his skin open with how powerful it was. Louis hadn’t always been honest about it but it had always been true nevertheless.
or, Louis doesn't tell Lestat he loves him enough. He decides to change that.

Summary
Lestat knows how much it hurt him, keeping all those secrets from him. Not sharing things until he was backed into a corner. Whatever the reason he struggled to really open up to him about certain things, he knew. He knew how much Louis craved to know more about him. He knew Louis would win that auction. He might not have put much thought, if any, into whether or not Louis would come and find him, but a part of him had to have known because he didn't choose just anywhere to bury himself alive.
He chose the middle of the Black Rock desert in Nevada.

Another soft, sad smile. Long fingers stroked what remained of Louis' hair as the apparition simply said, “I love you, Louis.”
Lips trembling, Louis opened his mouth to answer his beautiful apparition, to plead for the spectre’s words to be true in reality. To tell him that Louis loved him too because he never had. He never told him, and now he never would and it burned but before the words could leave his lips that scorching sensation materialized within his flesh. It ripped through his nerve endings, entwining with the phantom of the sun still throbbing within him and through to his heart, across his torso and into his groin.
Louis’ heart suddenly started to pound, unbearable heat pulsing through his entire being. His body felt hot, nearly as hot as the sun reducing him to ashes.

“Oh, spare me, Louis! I knew what you were doing but as you’ve so graciously pointed out, I am simply so desperate to be loved I ate up every crumb of the illusion!” Lestat’s eyes were wide and wild in that way only his got. His volume turned way up.
“It wasn’t an illusion,” Louis stated firmly.
Lestat laughed, cruel and disbelieving. “I don’t believe you.”
Louis sighed, eyes slipping closed. Silently beseeching himself to remain calm. Lestat was in a bad way, had been for some time. His feelings on the matter were valid, despite how much Louis wished to combat them.
He regretted his impulse reactions last night so much. Regardless of if he’d tried to make up for them after, his words clearly left some damage in their wake. The old wounds of the past, still festering beneath them. That's okay, Louis could work with some damage, heal the old wounds, it wasn’t beyond repair.
Nothing ever was, with them.

It was cold in the desert after the sun went down. But some nights, Louis woke just early enough to feel the heat of the day still bleeding from the sand under his bare feet. Evening primrose bursting yellow under moonlight in the flower boxes that lined half the perimeter of their trailer. Fang marks ever-healing on the line of his neck, the tender flesh of his inner thighs. They’d been living for months out in the Nevada wilderness all alone, and all they seemed to do was fuck and eat and fight and tend the flowers.
Louis turned his face to the moonlight, shut his eyes, breathed the lingering daylight warmth inside him, let it fill his lungs to near-bursting. He sensed Lestat at his back before they were touching, the thump of his heart the ever-present song of the desert. The sand, the moonlight, the flowers, and him.
Or: The one where Louis and Lestat run away to the desert together.
