Summary
Mac took Murdoc’s hand. It was large and warm, the skin rough on his palm. Calluses and tiny scars littered his hand, warn in place from his chosen trade. Mac’s heart thumped suddenly and he swallowed. He wasn’t sure why he was anxious about doing this. He’d set plenty of bones before, many of them worse injuries than this one. (But, then, none of them had been on Murdoc.)

Mac wakes up in the hands of an enemy, kidnapped on an undercover op. With the Phoenix team out of reach, he has no choice but to rely on an unlikely ally. Murdoc. Trinity and Dennis have been roommates for three months, and she wouldn't say that they're friends.
Sure, they spend all of their time together. And yes, they watch The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives religiously every week and chat about it at work. And yeah, fine, she'll meal prep them both lunch while he fixes her sink, but they're not friends. And that's how it'll stay.
Until the day a patient comes into the ER and Dennis refuses to treat him. Not out of revulsion. Not because the guy’s an ass.
Because Dennis is terrified.
And fear has a funny way of cracking things open.

“These kids won’t tell you what happened.”
Emily pinches her brow. “Why?”
“Childhood sexual assault victims don’t speak up,” Spencer says, “Not nearly as often as an adult might. So many of these kids don’t have a concept of what’s appropriate, and if they did question it, it’s almost guaranteed to be from someone older, either an older child or an adult they’re told to respect. It wouldn’t get anywhere. If they were teenagers, maybe, but most of these kids are four through ten. We can’t expect them to talk about it. Most of them can’t even conceptualize it.”
It feels like a very quiet whisper in a very quiet room: it was me, it says, but Spencer won’t admit to it.
This is what it takes for a victim to speak up.
