Caitlyn Kiramman, although raised in the UK, was born to an American father, rendering her eligible to become president of the United States. She took an interest in politics in her youth, learning all about the United States from her father while he was a doctor at RAF Lakenheath. She moved to the US for university, where she studied law and philosophy at Harvard. Throughout Caitlyn's tumultuous political career, a security officer, Vi, is assigned to her by the state of Massachusetts, and she can't help but be accompanied by the officer as she progresses through her career, ultimately reaching the White House and requesting Vi's services as Special Agent in Charge of the Presidential Protective Division.

Summary
After ten years in Stillwater for a crime she didn't commit, Vi breaks herself out and goes home. Her homecoming doesn't go like she thought it would.
Two years later, she's out of control and out on the streets. She's now a champion pitfighter, a raging alcoholic, and completely on her own. Despite her family's best (and desperate) efforts to help, Vi's on a one-way track to ending up either dead or back in prison.
At the same time, Caitlyn arrives in the undercity to collect data and information for her thesis. She starts her research from a local bar called The Last Drop, which puts her right into Vi's path. Vi might have been out of her family's home for years, but she's still not going to let a topsider put them in danger.

Vi had an idle thought of the ragdoll being dressed in a vaguely familiar manner, before her eyes landed on her own younger face, painted in watercolor inside a wooden frame.

They were happy. Vi remembers that much.
The life she made with Caitlyn, finding comfort in each other, living with purpose and happiness. Until Vi comes home to shattered glass and silence. Caitlyn was gone. The house was wrecked, and Vi had no real answers, just blood on the wall and a missing person. Then came the evidence, a weapon, her fingerprints, surveillance footage. It didn't matter what she told enforcers, it only mattered that there was clear damning evidence. The case was rushed and the trial was cruel. Guilty: Life in prison.
In Stillwater she was 516, no longer Vi. She traded pieces of herself for survival in a place meant to break people. But even as lost hope for herself, she held onto one thing: Caitlyn. Her memory, her warmth.
Seven years later, blood and endurance earned her a different kind of sentence: freedom if she takes it on their terms. Off-grid mercenary work, surviving in the shadows, taking jobs she's never meant to come back from.
When whispers of a new deadly "weapon" with midnight blue hair begins circulating, Vi wonders if this is the lead she has been waiting for.

Vi woke fucked up.
She could mostly tell because the Caitlyn was still here, sitting in the chair at the edge of the hotel room, watching her with a grin like a dagger and eyes that narrowed in judgement. Her eyes, dark blue flint, flitted to the woman curled away from Vi, flitted back to VI's face.
The Caitlyn cocked her head, and Vi rolled out of bed. She closed one nostril with her thumb, exhaled out of her nose with force. Blood and tissue rocketed out and hit the stranger’s floor.
The Caitlyn looked downwards in disgust at her, and Vi rolled her eyes.
“You're not going to stay long,” Vi said, voice rocky and gruff.

During the fight for the undercity, Vi lost Caitlyn, lost her sister, and lost herself. But the Caitlyn in her mind hasn't gotten the message - a version of the Piltie that only comes around when Vi isn't sober.
