Shouto could see Midoriya's eyes start to shine as he blinked rapidly, ignoring the odd impulse to move closer.
"I just get worried, sometimes. That I did something to hurt them in the past, and they'll still hold a grudge against me now." He looked back up at Shouto for a moment before squeezing his eyes shut, his voice cracking as he continued. "I don't want that to happen - we'll have bonded so much again, I don't know if I would be able to handle something like that."

The Crystal Gems knew that Homeworld was going to invade soon, but even Garnet couldn't predict Homeworld's sudden attack that rendered all of them - except the young hybrid, Steven Universe - corrupting and presumably unable to be helped.
However, when a sudden turn of events heals one of the gems before their mind could fully be ripped apart from the Diamonds' song, the remaining Crystal Gems must fight for their planet and it's inhabitants; even if it means fighting their old friends or losing themselves protecting their home.
