It’s been such a long time since he’s heard his sister’s voice David startles, the skillet clattering into the soapy basin of the sink. He turns to glance at her. The plate he’d prepared has been picked at and pushed aside and her hand is working deliberately across a piece of parchment. The crayon is pressed so hard against it, he can see the wax shavings gather on its surface from across the room. But Leah’s face is impassive as she works. The same impassive face that she’d made when she’d found him shaking in the bedroom after the creature’s attack, the same as when she’d watched him slave in the field for hours as he dug both of his parents’ graves, the same impassive expression since Teddy was laid in the ground.
