    יונתן ידע כל חייו שגם אמא שלו נתפסה בעבר, אבל לא במלכודת. ליבה נכבש בקסמיו של בן אדם – של אבא שלו, כמובן – וברוב כאב היא הסכימה להחליף את הזנב הסגול-כחול הנוצץ שלה בזוג רגליים. הוא אמנם לא זוכר את הימים שחיו עם אבא מחוץ לים טוב במיוחד, אבל הוא יודע שהיא עשתה ככל יכולתה עד שלא יכלה לשאת עוד, ואז ארזה את חפציה המעטים בשקט, העירה אותו הקטן באמצע הלילה, ונמלטה איתו חזרה אל הים. הוא יודע גם שהיא לא היחידה שנשבתה בקסמיהם של בני האדם, אך לברר מי מבני מינם ברח אל רצועת החול שלמעלה ועוד לא חזר תהיה משימת התאבדות של ממש.

    זו הסיבה שיונתן עזב את הים באותו היום.
