Summary
Two months in, and Evan Buckley is still waiting for the floor to drop. He’s waiting for the shouting, the accusations of being a screw-up, and the heavy-handed "lessons" that defined his last relationship.
Tommy Kinard is patient, calm, and—most importantly—safe. He doesn't mind the flinches, the frantic apologies for broken glass, or the way Buck tries to make himself invisible when voices get too loud. He’s willing to learn the map of Buck’s triggers, one bumpy road at a time

Summary
"Hey," Eddie says. "Can we go outside for a minute?"
Buck looks up and his face is carefully neutral, which on Buck is the equivalent of a five-alarm blaze because this man has never been neutral about a single thing in his life.
"Sure."
They leave cash on the table and step out into the parking lot. The air is heavy and thick with honeysuckle and asphalt and the far-off electric promise of rain. The cat is gone and the neon sign buzzes above them, pink and sputtering.
"I don't want to stay here tonight," Eddie says.
Buck’s eyebrows tick up. "Okay?"
Hesitating, cutting a look back at the diner, Eddie says, "Look, I know we were gonna find a motel somewhere around here but this place doesn't sit right with me. I can't explain it. I'd rather just keep driving."
He's bracing for Buck to push back, to ask what specifically feels wrong, use this as a doorway back into the booth and the hand and all of it. But Buck just looks at his face for a second and nods.
"Yeah. Okay. Let's go."

Summary
“Eddie,” Buck tries. “You could, uh… I get why you asked for two rooms, but maybe we should…” The bed is small. They’d be touching all night, and that would be bad, given what happened last night—it would be terrible; Buck definitely doesn’t want it.
He doesn’t want Eddie pressed against his chest, doesn’t want his soft, steady breath at his ear. He doesn’t want it so bad that he says, “Splitting up gets people killed in horror movies.”
Eddie’s answering smile is surprisingly soft. “We’re not in a horror movie, Buck.”

Summary
It's been a little bit since Bobby took Buck to task for the first time, he's not yet had cause to do so again, but when Buck comes in late and with an attitude up to here, that's surely not something Bobby can spank him for, right? Bobby is insistent that he's not Buck's father, just his captain, spanking Buck for attitude and lateness isn't in the scope of their agreement, it's not something Buck could lose his life or job for. Chores should get Buck to knock the attitude off though, right?

Summary
“I’m Bobby, by the way.” The man looked at him expectantly, waiting for Evan to answer. Bobby then raised an eyebrow, further trying to prompt an answer out of him. But instead of giving him his name Evan simply muttered “Doesn’t matter.”
“Of course it matters.” Bobby told him, smiling kindly before the pair started walking.
Evan shoved his hands in his pockets, “No, it really doesn’t.”
“Well, is there a nickname I could use instead?”
“Why do you care?” He huffed.
“I need to call you something.”
Evan frowned, no one had ever cared enough for that, but then again the only people he knew were his family and they didn’t care about him, at least not about him as a person. ‘Evan’ was the name of the thing they’d created to keep Daniel alive, and now ‘Evan’ wasn’t needed, he’d been discarded, so he might as well get rid of the name too.
He hesitated for a second before saying “Buck, you can call me Buck.”
