Summary
“Kris, go… Finish this.” Susie’s voice leaves no room for argument.
They seem reluctant. Their throat works against a lump, staring at Susie still, eyes a little wet.
“Go on, Kris,” Ralsei soothes. “I’ll stay with her.”
Kris inclines their head in a listless nod. When they walk away, the steps ring heavy.
Susie’s knees give out then, the effort too much, and she falls into a heap on the ground. Only Ralsei’s hold on her breaks the fall.
“You’re hurt,” Ralsei murmurs.
At the end of their adventures, there is only numbness and silence.
And a very injured Susie.

It was through Susie taking off her jacket that Kris realized just how many scars she had. They weren’t scars like theirs, no even rows or intentionally placed cuts, but instead were the random assortment you got from being particularly clumsy or rambunctious in childhood. Dark and light slashes of skin where she’d healed, up her forearms or over her biceps, little scratches or sunken, deep scars - she had it all. They knew she was a bit rough-and-tumble, but seeing the scars was something else.

When she closes her eyes she can still see Ralsei crying. Tripping over his words, his breaths stuttery and scared, how small he was, there, dwarfed by the stained glass. All his weirdness of the day narrowed down into one singular point, shadowed by darkness and lit only with each booming crack of something like thunder, illuminating the teartracks down his muzzle. It made something in her chest shake, too. Some piece of her crack, under the weight of his sorrow. She never wanted him to cry.
She could never give him up.
(Or: Susie finds herself heading to Castle Town, in the aftermath of everything that has happened.)

The force of the knife sends Kris skidding onto their knees.
They’ve been hit before. Hell, they’ve been downed before, countless times within Dark Worlds, but they’ve never felt a pain as strange as the kind the Roaring Knight inflicts. Like a wound forming inside-out.
Wordlessly, Ralsei and Susie each take one of their hands and pull them to their feet. It’s the small, but instinctual gesture of care from the both of them that makes something warm and saccharine swell in Kris’ chest. The three of them look out for one another without even having to think about it first.
Or, in pursuit of the Roaring Knight, Kris considers the Mortifying Ordeal of Being Known.
