“But you admit it! You did tempt me!”

“I offered you warm food during a storm,” Crowley argues. “If you call that temptation, I’d hate to see you talk to an innkeeper.” Aziraphale scowls some more. Crowley shrugs. “Besides, no harm done. You seem to be enjoying yourself.”

He has Aziraphale there. “Still,” he says, spreading his hands wide. “It has to be said—” He glances up to the sky. “—for anyone listening, that I am not at fault for my appetite.”

“Never said you were,” Crowley says. “Just said you liked the oysters.”

    Summary

“You look –” Stede steps forward, and if she says “pretty,” Ed thinks she might tear her own face off. She doesn’t mind that sometimes, but tonight she wants to be something different.

“Astonishing,” Stede says, moving closer, close enough to touch. Her fingers land on the lapel of Ed’s velvet coat, smoothing the grain of it. “The most beautiful person I’ve ever seen.”

“Beautiful." Ed's voice is unfamiliar to her, a low rasp.

“Handsome,” Stede says quietly, and the word catches in Ed’s throat like a diamond.

    Summary

Aziraphale has read every book in his shop at least once. He has reread some of his favored volumes dozens of times, has memorized whole great swaths of them. If his own words are insufficient to convince Crowley of his sincerity, then perhaps the words of others can!

(He might have the decency to ask the books what they thought of this plan. The books had been watching the two of them for over a hundred years, and certainly had a great deal to say on the matter. But Aziraphale neglects to consult them, and thus will be very unprepared for what happens next.)

Back on earth, Aziraphale tries to apologize.

    Summary

That’s why you decided to drive a scooter to the Downs? You wanted to break laws?”

“I planned to trespass, too,” Aziraphale said conspiratorially. “Mr. Haverford’s estate has a lovely view of the ocean.”

Crowley burst out laughing. He couldn’t help it. But Aziraphale blushed and looked twitchy. “I suppose it would seem funny to you,” he muttered.

“It’s just… angel, you like being the good one.” He ought to, he’d lorded it over Crowley often enough.

“I can do unexpected things.” Aziraphale turned to face him. His expression was a strange mix of contemplation and terror: a first-time parachute jumper looking out the open door of the plane.

“I know that, but you don’t–”

“And I can go fast,” Aziraphale said. His eyes dropped to Crowley’s lips.

    Crowley’s stomach swooped. “Angel–”

“I can break rules,” Aziraphale whispered. “Especially the ones that don’t make sense anymore.”
