Yes, I had fully accepted that the Violet-Sorrengail-Casual-Sex-Agreement ship had sailed when, later that week after sparring practice, Violet cornered me.
“Well, I gave it some thought,” she said. “And I think we should do this thing.”
I could feel the corners of my mouth curve up slightly in a smile. So the ship hadn’t sailed after all.
“What thing?” I asked, raising an eyebrow at her. Of course I knew full well what she was referring to, but gods, if it wasn’t fun to see her squirm.
“You know what thing,” she said, her cheeks turning a delightful shade of pink.
“I don’t think that I do,” I smirked.
“You want me to say it?” She asked, narrowing her eyes at me. “Here?”
“Well how else am I supposed to know what you’re talking about, Violence?”
She sighed. For a moment I thought she might just walk away from me out of pure irritation, but then she lowered her voice to a quiet whisper. “I think we should make that agreement to help each other out when Tairn and Sgaeyl are mating.”
I shot her a satisfied grin. “Oh Violence, I thought you’d never ask.”

It's been five days since the Battle of Basgiath and Xaden still hasn't heard from Sgaeyl. The dragon left the college, needing time and distance to reflect on and process the changes to their bond since Xaden reached for power. Xaden is determined to give her that space, even as his magic drains the longer she stays away. He fights the urge to channel from the earth with everything he has but being a rider, his body is no longer compatible with life without magic.
He can wait for her to come back. He can hold out.

The line goes quiet and then she hears a loud thump and a muffled swear. “Come again, please?” Rhiannon’s voice is more high pitched now, shocked.

Xaden’s is on his back, a black dragon that covers the area from shoulder to waist on the right side of his spine. There is a second, smaller relic tucked under the black dragon’s wing, a shimmering gold dragon that people assume is a tattoo. When he bonds Sgaeyl, she claims the other side of his back, mirroring his soulmate mark and wrapping her tail around the little gold dragon.

This is a rewrite of my previous fic “The Wingleader – Xaden’s POV”. It’s a Fourth Wing retelling from Xaden’s POV with new Iron Flame updates. It follows the dialogue and chapter timeline from Fourth Wing with my own interpretations and theories of Xaden’s actions and feelings.
