Buck gives up on the swan that’s looking more and more like a misshapen duck, and just folds the napkin into a simple triangle, palms sweating, suddenly feeling like a fraud all over again. It's not like he even has to come out to Christopher right now, but – he wants to. He really wants to.
In the corner of his eye, he sees Eddie quietly emerge from the kitchen, leaning against the archway with one oven mitt still on. He looks at Buck and nods, ever so slightly, like he knows exactly what's going through his head. Buck takes a deep breath, and turns his chair to face Chris more fully.
"Um, Chris?"
“Yeah?” Chris squints at him suspiciously. Buck is silent and weird for a moment too long apparently because Chris huffs out, "Why do you look like you're about to ask me to bury a body?"

“You handled that well,” Tommy said, as they left the restaurant and stepped out into this cool evening air. His words were soft, and gentle – genuine, even. As though he really meant it. Buck was baffled, frankly.
“I handled that with as much grace as an elephant doing ballet,” Buck glared at his - his date? - incredulously. “Tommy, did you hit your head? Are you concussed? Do I need to take you to the emergency room?”
or, after the eddie shaped hiccup of their first date, buck and tommy walk and talk - about coming out and why buck deserves a nice boyfriend.

If Buck had to pinpoint how he ended up on his knees at 10pm in an abandoned parking lot, he’d say it started like this:
He gets a text from Tommy the day after Eddie hurts his ankle at basketball, a seemingly nondescript thing that simply says Coffee? He stares at the text for what seems like hours but probably wasn’t longer than five minutes or so, his thumb hovering over the keyboard. He’s not sure why he’s so nervous, is the thing: Tommy Kinard seems like a nice enough guy, Chimney and Hen both seemed to get along well enough with him, and him and Eddie clearly get along well, having been casually texting and hanging out for days now.
(He’s not entirely sure why he gets such an ugly feeling about it, but he tries to ignore it as much as he can.)

“Right,” Eddie says slowly. “Except it’s Chim’s bachelor party, so we can hardly bring dates along, even if we could find them. That’d be weird.”
“Well,” Buck says, “I was thinking… what if we were each other’s dates?”
Eddie’s brain bluescreens for a moment.
Buck must take his total lack of reaction for disagreement, because he hurriedly says, “Like, a pretend date. That way we could test out our, like you said, moves on each other. And then be totally truthful about whether they worked or not. So we get honest feedback and we don’t have to worry about finding someone to try them out on and we can still make it to Chim’s party. And then give Chris some advice before Sunday. Right? Does that make sense?”
or, chris wants dating advice and it turns out taking your best friend on a pretend date to practice being as romantic as possible is not a good idea in theory or in practice, considering the pesky being-in-unrequited-love of it all

"Oh," Josh replies, with the air of a man solving a mystery that's never occurred to him until right now. Then his eyes turn sympathetic. "That Buck didn't tell anyone there about that part of you, did he?"
Buck shrugs. "I was sleeping around a lot, it just didn't - like, I tried to be a Navy SEAL at one point, and the academy guys were way less like, scary macho straight energy than those guys but,
they were still like that a bit, like I'd tell them about girls but they'd make those kind of, you're so gay for this jokes with each other, and like, I get that they were joking, I just knew, it'd be weird to tell them about the guys. It was just, I don't know easier, to be that guy, you know?"*

Summary
The lights flicker before the elevator comes to a stop.
A few times actually.
So maybe they should’ve thought something was wrong before the thing came to a screeching halt.
And it was screeching.
The sound it made when the lights went off and it finally stopped was kind of daunting.
The annoyed groan Eddie lets out along with the thud that lets Buck know he dropped against one of the walls is also disconcerting.
Or maybe just concerning. When that’s followed by the sound of him sliding to the floor along with the emergency lights filling the elevator with a dim reddish light.

She's expecting another wince, or even for him to duck out of the conversation entirely, but instead Buck is staring at her like she's grown a second head. "Maddie. I've never been on a date with Eddie."

Eddie’s face must still show confusion, because Buck lets out a frustrated huff and then shoves his phone right in front of his face. “Look.”

Summary
When Eddie gets a phone call from his son's science teacher about reasonable accommodations it sets off a series of events that turn his life completely upside down.
"I should probably get going," Buck says. "It's a school night after all."
Eddie appreciates this devotion to duty, but at the same time he's a little disappointed. He's repaid Buck's favor so now there's no need for them to see each other except on parent teacher night. But he doesn't want that. It's been a handful of hours and the thought of Buck never coming by again already seems impossible. "Look," he says, letting the words come out of his mouth before he can overthink them back in again. "I don't know about you, but making friends when you're a single dad with an insane job is hard. I have your number. Is it okay if I use it for non-school purposes?"
Buck's insta-smile is so bright it's practically blinding. "I would love that."
