Shoto felt sick.
So sick he didn’t even notice that the fight he had gotten in alongside his classmates was a losing battle…for them.
One of the villains, a man with a snake transformation Quirk, had slithered onto Bakugo, Midoriya, and Shoto, all without their notice, and slapped on a Quirk Emitter dampening bracelet onto all three of them.
When the reinforcements of thirty more villain grunts on all four sides of the warehouse arrived, the three hero students didn’t stand a chance.
Just before one of the villains knocked him out with a blow to the back of his head, outside of the warehouse, Shoto could just barely make out his father’s silhouette across the street. It stood there, menacingly, before turning tail and blasting off skyward once again.

Or: Shoto Todoroki attempts to find out how useful his hero training truly is when he can't use his Quirk, he's isolated from his friends, and their well-being depends entirely on his ability to satisfy the demands of the villain who brought him here.

Poppy kneels beside them, holding out the phone. "Who do I call?"
"Aizawa. Speed dial two." Katsuki doesn't take his eyes off Shoto, doesn't stop the counting, doesn't loosen his hold. "Tell him we need him here. Now. Tell him.... tell him someone found documentation."
Poppy's fingers fumble with the phone, finally getting it unlocked, hitting the speed dial. It rings twice before Uncle Sho's voice answers.
"Katsuki, it's Sunday morning, this better be—"
"Uncle Sho, it's Poppy." Her voice cracks. "Something's wrong with Papa. He's— I don't know what's happening, he can't breathe and he's crying and shaking and I don't know what to do—"
The change in Aizawa's voice is instant. "I'm on my way. Five minutes. Is Katsuki with him?"
"Yes, he's— he's trying to help but Papa won't stop—" She can't finish the sentence because Shoto has started making these horrible keening sounds, like he's in physical pain.
