Dual POV, as god (Rachel Reid) intended.
Shane is a methodical vigilante killer who isn't crazy about the process but thinks he's doing good in the world.
Ilya is a torchered soul who doesn't want to kill but has inherited an incomplete familiar bond with a demon he inherited through his mom (and grandmother) that compells him to kill.
Neither of them knows about the others extracurriculars until the demon turns its sights on Shane.

Summary
There was a discord discussion about the lack of soulmate stories for this fandom, and people seemed interested in the basis of this one. This is an alternate universe where they exist in the same universe as the Thai BL series "La Pluie".
In this world, a percentage of the population are born with a condition of unknown origin, theorised part biologic, part magic. People with this condition lose their hearing when it rains. In the original series, when they're 20 they sometimes hear the voice of their soulmate, as long as it's raining where both of them are. I retconned it for extra sad points to happen when Ted's 17.
I think that's all the premise you need. If you get a chance, watch the BL, it's on iqiyi and it will make you cry.

Edit: if you saw the first version of this title, no you didn't. That was the joke title I gave it in the beginning, served me well over these months in the drafts folder and I immediately hated it once I'd published it. It's still not perfect but I can't obsess over it any longer

Summary
Trent Crimm dies on a Wednesday.
It doesn’t feel right, for him to die on what should be such a normal day. Ted can hardly believe it, at first. Feels like some sort of big old cosmic joke, really, if he’s being honest about it.
It’s real hard for him to be honest about it.
Trent should have lived forever. He and Ted were supposed to be old together; they were supposed to be married for decades, supposed to see their children have grandchildren, supposed to make a million dinners and have a thousand little arguments and fall asleep in each other’s arms every night for the rest of their nights.
Instead, Trent has a brain aneurysm and dies in his sleep.
And it happens on a Wednesday.
