Post S4, canon-compliant, apocalyptic mileven fic in which: Mike feels free in his recent professed love for El, but old and new fears remain- is he good enough? Does El still feel the same, or were his unveiled emotions too late? Meanwhile, El has to save the world, for once and for all, while also expressing herself like never before to Mike. And she's not sure which is scarier.
Also: El gets long overdue love and appreciation from everyone in Hawkins. -

We're so used to Eleven being the ultimate hero but...
What if El didn't regain her full powers in episode eight? And the military raid didn't go quite as planned and Dr. Brenner wasn't shot and killed in the desert? What if battling Vecna was done differently?
AKA alternate scenes and ending to season four's "Nina Project" silo lab and episodes eight and nine of volume two ("Papa" - 4x08 and "The Piggyback" - 4x09). As much as I have mixed emotions about season 4, I did want to write this and so a big thanks to jopper1983 for the initial prompt and patience.
This is only my interpretation of the characters created by the Duffer Brothers, I don't own Stranger Things, etc.

In the shadowed aftermath of Project NINA, a sinister experiment that left El imprisoned and scarred, the once-close bonds of the Party are shattered.

Oh! The flowers!“Careful, careful, you’re squishing your present.” He said quickly. She immediately pulled back, her eyes drifting to where his hand has squished between them. The bouquet of flowers had remained unaffected, which tripped him out. Was the hug not as tight as he thought? Or…
He looked at the flowers, a mix of yellow, purple, and a little pink of a pale pink. He felt a weird bit of panic in his chest, like he had on that cliff of the quarry, torn between two decisions.
”Yeah, I, uh…” He stopped. Was he really gonna go through with this. He looked to El, her face expectant and soft. He swallowed, mouth feeling dry. Then took a breathe. “…I hand picked those for you in Hawkins?” The words left his mouth with a steadily rising intonation. Making it seem more like a question than a statement.
“Both?” El asked.
Both, his brain supplied.
But as he looked down at the bunch, he hesitated.
He just couldn’t bring himself to lie.

The look on El’s face is devastating. She looks defeated. He remembers what she said about Brenner telling her she wasn’t ready. He knows she blames herself.
He tries to talk to her when they get to his house. After they have their reunions, Mike pulls El aside, but she only wants to go to the hospital, to see Max, and she won’t talk to him about anything else.
They still haven’t talked about their fight in California. Mike knows he needs to say something about what he said at the pizza parlor. Saying ‘I love you.’ It didn’t work. It wasn’t enough. He’s pretty sure it didn’t save their relationship, and he’s even more sure that it didn’t save El. She did that herself.
They’ve fought Vecna, but what comes next? Filling in the scenes I felt were missing from season four.

Summary
With the aftermath of the Mall the group notice an absence not just Hoppers but Mikes. Joyce, Eleven, and the others believe he may have been caught in the collapse, while Dustin holds onto hope that something more sinister is at play.
While Hopper struggles to survive the brutal prison camp, he uncovers whispers of another captive: an American boy used as a pawn in an unholy alliance between Russian science and the Upside Down. Desperate to save Mike, Hopper risks everything to send a message back to Hawkins.
In California , El is devastated by Mike’s 'death' but begins to experience nightmares of him.
Joyce gets more than she bargained for when she hunts down Hopper in Russia.
Mike faces a battle of his own—a fight to retain his identity and humanity against the forces twisting him into an unknown identity from the brutality of Russia.
