Carl had Rick’s shoes to fill now that Michonne had fucked off to god knows where, and Negan can see it weighing on him. He knows because he’s been there, too. Knows how leading can be a burden. And maybe that’s why Carl seeks him out.
Because there’s also days when Carl comes to sit across from his cell, and Negan will immediately know that it’s one of those visits. Carl doesn’t talk to him. He doesn’t even really look at him. He’s just silent, checked out and in his own little world. Like he just wants somewhere silent to sit, sit somewhere where no one is asking anything of him- but just not alone.
And Negan can absolutely be that person for him. He wants to be that person for him.

Once he wakes up, gunshot wound, one less eye, and the fact that he’s all alone in a burning wreck flooded with walkers now added to the equation, he realises his situation. Full of rage and fuelled by his untreated trauma, physical and mental, he manages to survive for a while on his own. Until he stumbles across a group calling themselves the Saviours.
Carl’s lucky their leader takes a liking to him, or else life would’ve become a whole lot shittier.

He felt his stomach turn as he got out and sat against the side of his truck, looking out into the preserve. Why did the Sheriff even offer him a job? Theo knew that what the Sheriff had said wasn’t true—that some of the pack had already forgiven him. The pack didn’t give a fuck about Theo, and that was fine. After everything he did, he’d be concerned if the pack cared, because that meant that eventually someone would come along, and Scott would forgive them, and they’d ruin the pack. It was good that the pack was keeping him at a distance, it was good that Scott finally learned that his blind trust in everyone wasn’t always safe, that sometimes, being suspicious helped you survive. But Theo hated that he was the one who taught them that lesson. Because the Sheriff had been right. Theo had done nothing but lie and deceive and manipulate for the better part of ten years, and all that got him was this.
Living in his truck, barely sleeping or even eating, completely alone because he’d destroyed the trust every single person had in him.
