It’s just that the automotive incidents he’s accustomed to usually involve him being in the car, rather than the poor sod being slammed into. Maybe that difference is the reason he’s seeing the light right now, ribs bruised and head reeling, as what could only be an angel leans over to get a look at him.
“Holy shit,” Oscar swears. “I just hit fucking Lando Norris with my car.”

Summary
After Starcourt, Steve ends up sleeping at Dustin’s house. It happens by accident: Mrs. Henderson drives him home because his parents don’t show up at the mall, and when Dustin asks if his parents are even in town at all, he casually admits that no, they aren’t, and actually he doesn’t know if or when they’ll be back. He hadn’t planned on telling the truth, but he’s currently suffering his third concussion in just as many years, and putting together a believable lie requires a few more brain cells than he currently possesses. The words come tumbling out before he can stop himself.

“There was a fire. At the mall. I worked there? At Scoops Ahoy.”
The way he says the last part sounds strange, like it’s really important somehow that Eddie believes him.
“Okay,” he says, then adds, “Is that why you look like that?”
Eddie’s never met a fire with fists, but he wants Steve to tell him what happened—not just assume.
There’s a beat of silence, like Steve’s weighing his options, and Eddie knows a lie’s coming before Steve even opens his mouth.
“Yeah. Building caved in. We made it out—Robin and I. Paramedics checked me over and said I couldn’t drive, so I decided to walk.”
Almost ten miles, Eddie estimates. Sure. Totally normal thing to do in the middle of the night, battered and bruised, after escaping a fire.
But he’s pretty sure that’s all he’s going to get, so he settles on, “Good thing I came along, then.”
“Yeah.”

“I just…” Jonathan’s eyes flicked up past Steve at the sound of the backdoor creaking open. “Mom.”
Steve turned to see Mrs. Byers’ in the doorway with a glass of water and a bottle of something. Probably the painkillers she’d promised. She gave him a matching look of concern and confusion, although she was quicker to conceal it.
He started to feel hot and embarrassed with the reaction he was getting. It hadn’t been meant to slow anything down, let alone draw everyone’s eyes to his bare chest. He leaned down to grab his soaking wet shirt off the back steps, although it was really just an excuse to look down and away from everyone’s gazes.
Mrs. Byers’ put out a hand as if to tap him on the shoulder and then drew it back like she was worried about hurting him.
“Steve, honey, you can borrow one of Jonathan’s shirts."
