"A story, grandpa?"
"Ah, yes. A story." So Nikolai began to talk.

The door barely closes before Yuri is pressed back against it—but their warring tongues and wandering hands didn’t start in the privacy of Otabek’s room.
Fresh off the ice, skin still slick with cooling sweat, they couldn’t keep to themselves for longer than the few minutes ride from the rink to the hotel. Maybe the taxi driver appreciated their barely contained restraint, maybe he would have enjoyed the show. Yuri doesn’t fucking care. The moment they stepped through the hotel lobby and into the lift, though, all bets were off.
Yuri only behaved even that long because of the placating hand squeezing his thigh and the promise in his companion’s gaze.
Is it stupid? Probably; they’d only become friends the other day. Throwing his arms around Otabek’s neck the moment they stepped off the ice had been risky enough, but then pushing them back, out of the rink and the view of the cameras and spectators to shove his tongue down the man’s throat? Wild. What else was Yuri supposed to do, though? The knight in strapping leather bullshit had been hard enough to resist in the glow of the setting sun, but now?
Adrenaline and hormones burn like poison in his veins.

Because if it goes badly … well, he’d rather do it where Otabek can turn around and hop right back on a plane to Kazakhstan.
What even would be the point of trying to suffer through a whole vacation together with rejection and pity weighing them down?
Yuri scoops his oozing heart off the tiled floor and locks it in the furnace of his determination. To harden it, strengthen it. Then, hands curled into tight fists, he sucks in a breath and storms forward, not stopping until he’s directly in front of his best friend, ignoring the hesitant confusion stamped across Otabek’s face.

Well, shit. This was supposed to be a calm family dinner with just the four of them, but now … now the siblings have to go let their parents in.

It's tournament time! And Yuri's ready to sweep the court with every pathetic team who crosses their path.
Riding high from their first match, a wrench is thrown in Yuri's plans when the gym their second match is in is twice as big as expected. And when their competitors turns out to include Otabek Altin: The underdog of youth volleyball. The dark horse who came out of nowhere and proved so damn good at the game, his team and competition in Kazakhstan couldn’t hold on to him. The man some Russian scout swooped in and snagged before anyone else could.
Yuri isn’t the only member of his team to take notice of the infamous player. Lilia seems to recognize him, too. But she straightens her already perfectly aligned spine, holds her head high, and tells her team to take their places.
Maybe he’s the only one who feels this way, but that alone helps restore some of Yuri’s faith. After all, they’re the Ice Tigers! The team with a reputation of being one of the best in all of Russia! They have a long-standing history of winning, their trophies fill an entire hallway back at school, and a good portion of them have Lilia’s name on them, either as a player or a coach.
Losing isn’t in their nature.

During one of his visits, hell breaks loose. The subject escapes. Then, Yuri truly comes face to face with the creature he's found so fascinating and learns the truth about who he is and what he desires.

Maybe they got all tangled and squished? No, not that either. His feet slide under relatively flat, smooth sheets with ease, and yet, the movement is… strange. Yuri just can’t put his finger on why.
