Summary
Connor hates his major, hates his classes, hates the plodding existence of doing the same thing every day while having no idea what he actually wants to do with his life. He’s lonely—homesick for a place that isn’t home, for friends he doesn’t have.
He knows he isn’t old enough for a midlife crisis, but he thinks maybe he’s having one anyways. Which is how he ends up awkwardly hiding in the corner of Jimmy's Bar, drowning his loneliness and despair with drinks he can’t really afford, wondering if he’ll ever work up the nerve to actually talk to anyone.
It’s purely by chance that someone sits down next to him: a man easily twice his age and built like an absolute wall with a voice that Connor would happily listen to for hours.

Summary
When Commander James Clark Ross offers him a place aboard HMS Terror for the upcoming Antarctic expedition, Thomas Jopson tells him the truth—or at least half of it—that he’s never sailed before. But Ross doesn’t need a sailor. He needs a steward who can weather the temper and erratic moods of his second-in-command, Commander Francis Crozier. Summary
As far as Hank is concerned it's easier to just pretend that Christmas doesn't exist, and he assumes that Connor feels the same way.
Connor tries his best to follow suit, but there's a strange sort of longing in his chest that he doesn't quite understand. Logically, he shouldn’t be able to miss something that he’s never had.
When Hank's friends tell him he's an idiot, he tries to put his own grief aside, taking a second chance at giving Connor the first Christmas that he deserves.

Summary
They fall into a companionable silence for the next hour of the drive, broken only by Hank singing along quietly with the radio. While Connor hums along from time to time, he mostly stares out the window, watching as the cityscape gives way to the sprawl of suburbs and finally to long stretches of woodland broken by the occasional small town. Now that he's identified the source of his anxiety, it's impossible to ignore. How had he not realized it before?
It isn't just a fear of his mind being invaded and his body taken over again, although of course that fear remains, as irrational as he knows it to be. It's the reminder that he was made to be used this way. That his objective had been to hunt and harm androids. He had been created only to destroy, and while he's worked to make a life beyond that initial purpose, he wonders if he'll always feel like he's outrunning it.
Hank plans a vacation up north. Connor's worried the weather will keep him from enjoying it; the cold and snow remind him of things he wishes he could forget, aspects of his past and of his own nature. It's a difficult time, but Hank makes it easier, like he always does, and he's good at keeping Connor warm, too.

Summary
In fall 2039, a year after the revolution, the first class of android students are admitted to universities nationwide. Connor, a criminology major, is excited to make friends and start learning about his favourite subject, android crime. Unfortunately, his Intro to Criminology professor, legendary criminal profiler Hank Anderson, turns out to be a set-in-his-ways, android-hating grump.
But Connor can't avoid him for long. With an android serial killer wreaking havoc on Detroit, the two are soon paired up on a mission to find out what turns androids into murderers. As Connor interviews android killers across the country, he finds he may not be as prepared for this line of work as he thought. Luckily, he is able to find solace, and more, in Professor Anderson's company.
