Summary
The year is 1848. The Royal Navy expedition to seek the Northwest Passage has been trapped in Arctic ice for nearly two years. Together, Captain Kirk and Commander Spock must face harsh conditions and dwindling supplies to lead their men overland to safety—if they can. They'll also have to contend with their feelings for one another. But all may not be quite as it seems.

The Enterprise is investigating an ion storm when mirror Kirk appears with an urgent message: mirror Spock is dead, his Resistance is foundering, and Spock must take his counterpart’s place in negotiations with the Terran Empire. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy agree to return to the mirror universe, only to find that all is not as it seems.
At the same time, Kirk and Spock learn a few things about their counterparts that lead them to question the nature of their own relationship—if they can stay alive long enough to work things out.

“May I?” Francis asks almost hesitantly, all rough Irish brogue, and James nods, swallowing.
Did Francis not know how he was embedded in James’ mind like the sound of the ice? That he was equally maddening, as James lies awake under his cold sheets at night trying to remember the feel of his mouth? Of his hands?
And now Francis is undressing him slowly and gently, pulling the fabric away from his shoulders and then folding the burnt cape into a neat square. Lifting the edge of James’ once-white sweater and helping him pull it over his head.
