She stopped crying almost immediately; all she wanted was a little care and attention. He knows the feeling. Her little head is still warm against the bare skin of his neck, with tiny puffs of air exhaling slowly against his skin, and it feels like somebody put the world in his hands.

Tom had never known himself to be a brave man, before the skitters came.
He stands in front of a ship of aliens, alone but for Weaver at his side, and it is Tom’s name that they call out. He is the one that they call, which is odd because he is not the leader of the group. They have the leader right there, next to him, and yet still, Tom is the one that they beckon to speak.

Al-Hashimi’s voice is soft and sympathetic, and it cuts through Robby like he’s butter. It feels like she’s taken a magnifying glass and turned the sun to smoulder inside his heart, burning up like his flesh is dry driftwood, kindling for a flame. He’s been desperately putting out the fire all day; what right does she have to hurt him like this?

If you try to leave town on that bike I swear I will fucking 302 you and you will be held in this ED, in front of everyone, until a bed opens up upstairs. Text me when you’re there and every hour until you go to sleep. Wear your fucking helmet.”
Jack tries not to show his relief as he saw Robby settle. He saw the wildness retreat. He didn’t look happy - had he ever seen Robby happy? - but he was going to do as he was told. A ridiculous twinge of pride in his chest; he could still make Robby obey."
OR
Jack Abbott is not going to let Robby kill himself, even if he has to fuck him into agreeing.

Five weeks and three days since Rebecca's death, Tom feels a familiar pulse of pain in his head. He grits his teeth and says a prayer—he can't afford this right now—but really, he's made it longer than he expected. Whatever he's tried to tell himself, it was always bound to happen. His father never did anything halfway.
Tom had just hoped it wouldn't happen at a time like this—crouched with Dai in the inky shadows of a bombed out barber shop while mechs groan and stomp just yards away, shaking the earth and sending showers of dust from the skeletal rafters to blanket their heads and taunt their noses with the threat of disastrously-timed sneezes.
In which Tom runs out of his migraine medication. Pre-series.
